A processor switches a driving state of an actuator based on a fact that a state of the treatment target has become a predetermined state when the electric energy is output from the energy output source. As the result, a state of the end effector is switched from a first grasping state to a second grasping state, a grasping force and a grasping pressure between the first grasping piece and the second grasping piece in the second grasping state being different from those in the first grasping state.

A hand tool has a pivot connection pivotally attaching a first arm to a second arm, with the pivot connection fixed relative to the first arm and movable to first and second positions relative to the second arm. A spring urges the pivot connection into the first position. When jaws on the front ends of the arms clamp tissue with force greater than a pre-set threshold, the spring force is overcome and the jaws may move linearly apart, allowing for more uniform clamping of the tissue. The first arm may have an arm spring extending between a front segment pivotally attached to a rear segment of the first arm.

The resilient band(s) is configured to bias the first and second jaw members towards an open position. The resilient band(s) is configured to flex in response to distal translation of the second jaw member relative to the first jaw member to thereby move the second jaw member relative to the first jaw member to a closed position for grasping tissue between the tissue-treating surfaces thereof. In the closed position, the second jaw member is disposed in an aligned orientation and is approximated relative to the first jaw member.

The web is positioned distal to the distal end of the outer sheath.

An actuator is movable between locked and unlocked positions such that: with the trigger in the un-actuated or first actuated position and the actuator in the locked position, movement of the trigger to the second actuated position is inhibited; with the trigger in the second actuated position and the actuator in the locked position, the trigger is retained in the second actuated position; and with the actuator in the unlocked position, the trigger is movable between the un-actuated or first actuated position and the second actuated position.

The first end and the second end extend axially out from the sheath end, wherein the sheath is movably supported by the body portion.

A removable electrode assembly for use in combination with a forceps having opposing end effectors and a handle for effecting movement of the end effectors relative to one another. The electrode assembly includes a housing which is removably engageable with the forceps and a pair of electrodes which are attachable to a distal end of the housing. The electrodes are removably engageable with the end effectors of the forceps such that the electrodes reside in opposing relation relative to one another. The electrode assembly also includes a cover plate which is removably attachable to the housing and at least one stop member for controlling the distance between the opposing electrodes. The stop member is selectively engageable with the electrodes.
