Artificial knee joint

The present invention provides an artificial knee joint that can reconstruct an anterior cruciate ligament in a state close to an original function. An artificial knee joint (1) that is used in a total knee replacement includes a femur member (10) and a tibia member (20). The tibia member (20) has a ligament insertion hole (20h) which pierces the tibia member (20) and which is formed at a position where once an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) exists in a knee replaced for the artificial knee joint (1). Therefore, a ligament can be provided such that a distal end (DT) of a femur (F) and a proximal end (PE) of a tibia (T) are joined to each other by passing the ligament through the ligament insertion hole (20h), which allows the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) to be reconstructed so as to be in the substantially same state as a knee replaced for the artificial knee joint (1).

A porous mesh surface treatment creates on an outer surface of the endoprosthetic device a three-dimensional surface structure similar to cancellous bone. Suture attachment features are provided at various locations around the treated surface structure to initially affix a vascularized soft tissue to the treated surface. As the patient heals the soft tissue grows and infiltrates the porous mesh surface to achieve an attachment strength substantially equal to the surrounding tissue.

The implants of the invention relate to improved implants formed using additive manufacturing techniques, the implants including a hemispherical cup portion, and an ischium flange, a pubic ramus flange and an ilium flange, each flange extending outwardly from the perimeter of the hemispherical cup portion, wherein the implant surface includes an area of integrally formed three dimensional scaffold on the bone apposition surfaces of the cup portion and on a bone apposition surface of at least one of the flanges of the implant. The invention also relates to implants with different surface texture and alignment features, together with methods for the manufacture of patient-specific implants of the invention.
