Method and device for reducing implant contamination from handling

An orthopedic implant has a removable handling cover coupled thereto which includes a thin-walled layer extending over a grasping portion of the outer surface. An outer container can sealingly house the orthopedic implant within a sterile environment and support the orthopedic implant in an orientation that presents the handling cover for grasping. A surgeon can manually grasp, handle and manipulate the implant into an implantation position, and remove the handling cover from the implant during implant surgery, and without the need to directly contact any surface of the orthopedic implant itself. Related methods of providing such an implant assembly and of reducing infection from contamination during implantation surgery are also disclosed.

DEVICE FOR POSITIONING A RESURFACING PROSTHESIS AND METHOD OF ASSEMBLING SAID DEVICE

Disclosed is a device for positioning a resurfacing prosthesis, including: a gripping and handling instrument for a main body of a resurfacing prosthesis; a connecting body, interposed between said gripping and handling instrument and said main body of said resurfacing prosthesis and suitable to connect them; a coupler which secures said connecting body to said main body, said coupler comprising: a plurality of bonding elements adapted to be interlocked, in an irremovable manner, in respective recesses provided in said connecting body; and a shear releaser, interposed between said main body of said resurfacing prosthesis and said connecting body, adapted to detach said connecting body from said main body. Other aspects are described and claimed.

ORTHOPAEDIC HIP PROSTHESIS SURFACE PROTECTION SYSTEM AND METHOD

An orthopaedic system includes a femoral stem assembly having a protective casing or shell that protects one or more mating surfaces of the femoral stem component from incidental damage. The system includes a femoral head assembly having a protective casing or shell that protects one or more mating surfaces of the femoral head component from incidental damage. The system may also include a surgical instrument that is configured to detach or remove the protective casings from the prosthetic components of the femoral stem assembly and the femoral head assembly and secure the femoral stem component to the femoral head component. Methods of use and performing an orthopaedic surgical procedure are also disclosed.

Protective cover for a prosthetic implant
10398571 · 2019-09-03 ·

A protective cover for a prosthetic implant is a flexible body defining an interior space in which a prosthetic implant is receivable. The body includes a lip and an area of weakness formed in one side of the body extending from the lip to a central (i.e., top) portion of the body. The cover can also include an elongated tab extending from a side of the body opposite the slit. The cover covers an exterior surface of the implant when the implant is received in the interior space and thereby prevents soft tissues through which the implant is advanced during surgical introduction of the implant into a joint of patient from contacting and becoming adherent to the exterior surface of the implant. The cover can be extracted and the implant released from the interior space through the area of weakness and into the joint by applying a pulling force to a side of the body opposite the area of weakness.

Impact absorbing pad

Various embodiments of an impact absorbing pad are disclosed herein. Each pad is configured to protect a load bearing surface of an implant from damage when the implant is implanted. Each pad may have an attachment portion that allows the pad to be attached to the load bearing surface. An impactor tool may also be attached to the load bearing surface and utilized the drive a portion of the implant into a bone cavity. The pad may be removed by hand, removed with the tool, or implanted with the implant. Related systems and methods for using and making the pad are also disclosed.

Orthopaedic surgical instrument system and method for protecting a femoral stem taper

An orthopedic hip prosthesis system is disclosed. The orthopedic hip prosthesis system comprises a femoral head component configured to articulate with a natural or prosthetic acetabulum of a patient, the femoral head component having a tapered bore formed therein, a femoral stem component having a tapered trunnion configured to be received in the tapered bore of the femoral head component, and a shell positioned over the tapered trunnion of the femoral stem component. The shell includes a frame extending over the tapered trunnion, and a protective coating applied to the frame and the tapered trunnion. A method of performing an orthopedic surgery is also disclosed.

USE OF LIPIDS FOR PREVENTING FRETTING CORROSION IN THE MODULAR TAPERS OF ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANTS
20190009002 · 2019-01-10 · ·

The use of lipids in the taper junction or other metal on metal interface of a modular orthopedic implant to prevent fretting corrosion and increase the pull off load. The incorporation of lipids or a lipid-like substrate within the taper junction increases the onset load and decreases the amount of corrosion. The incorporation of lipids also increases the pull-off load necessary to separate the head from the neck. As a result, the use of lipids in the taper junction of an orthopedic implant should reduce the need for revisions of implants, such as such as knee and hip replacements, which are often needed because of fretting corrosion.
