Prophylactic bactericidal medical device

A medical implant system is described for inhibiting infection associated with a joint prosthesis implant. An inventive system includes an implant body made of a biocompatible material which has a metal component disposed on an external surface of the implant body. A current is allowed to flow to the metal component, stimulating release of metal ions toxic to microbes, such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses. One detailed system is completely surgically implantable in the patient such that no part of the system is external to the patient while the system is in use. In addition, externally controlled devices are provided which allow for modulation of implanted components.

Press fit stem
11684398 · 2023-06-27 · ·

A method of implanting a medical implant comprises the steps of reaming a tapered bore to a first depth and a counter bore, coaxial to the tapered bore, to a second depth less than the first depth in a long bone. The counter bore has a larger diameter than the tapered bore. The method further includes inserting a medical implant into the tapered bore and counter bore. The medical implant includes a stem and a collar disposed around a portion of the stem. Inserting the medical implant include fully seating a portion of the stem into the tapered bore to form a press-fit between the stem and the long bone. The collar may be moved into the counter bore to a depth less than the second depth.

MECHANICAL ASSEMBLY INCLUDING EXTERIOR SURFACE PREPARATION
20170354505 · 2017-12-14 ·

A system and method for improving mechanical assemblies, such as prosthetic implants, intended to be installed in living tissue such as bone. Force-imparting devices are adapted and may include angularity, which may be introduced with specialized additive manufacturing, which may impart congruent cross-sections while providing variable stiffness. In some cases, the variable stiffness may be “stretchy” in a longitudinal direction and “rigid” in a radial directional which may provide an assembly bias. Additive manufacturing may allow the material of a prosthesis to be varied (e.g., density/porosity) to create variable stiffness over a length.

Ceramic Spacer for the Two-Sided Replacement of Implants in Shoulder, Knee and Hip as a Result of Infections

A spacer comprised of individual components as joint replacement in the arthroplasty of shoulder, knee, and hip for the temporary surgical care of infections in the joint. The problems addressed by the invention are those of avoiding an adhesion of the bone to the spacer and a release of wear products, achieving that the patient does substantially not experience any mobility restriction, and keeping the wear and tear of the spacer as little as possible. These problems are solved in that at least one component of the spacer is made of a ceramic material, of a plurality of ceramic materials, or of a non-ceramic material having a ceramic coating.

Hip implant with reduced wear

There is disclosed a hip implantation structure, comprising a stem and a femoral head, the femoral head comprising a plurality of grooves, an outer acetabular cup and an inner liner, wherein presence of the inner liner and plurality of grooves on the femoral head reduces friction and thereby reduces wear of the hip implantation structure. The hip implantation structure is used for total hip arthroplasty. The plurality of grooves on the femoral head comprises a plurality of hemispherical grooves of varying widths, and debris produced by the inner liner gets trapped inside the plurality of grooves, resulting in a reduced chance of adhesive wear.

IMPLANTABLE REPORTING PROCESSOR FOR AN ALERT IMPLANT

The present disclosure provides alert implants that comprise a medical device and an implantable reporting processor (IRP), where one example of such a medical device includes a component for a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) such as a tibial extension, a femoral component for hip replacements, a breast implant, a distal rod for arm or leg breakage repair, a scoliosis rod, a dynamic hip screw, a spinal interbody spacer, and tooling and methods that may be used to form the alert implant, and uses of such alert implants in the health maintenance of patients who receive the implant.

ARTIFICIAL JOINT STEM
20230173139 · 2023-06-08 ·

In the present disclosure, an artificial joint stem includes a base extending in a vertical direction when a proximal side of a human body in use is defined as an upward direction, and a coating film containing a calcium phosphate-based material and an antimicrobial material disposed on a part of the base. The base includes one or more boundary lines on the base defined by a presence or absence of the coating film. The one or more boundary lines include a first boundary line located on a lower side of the base with respect to the coating film. The first boundary line is located so as to intersect the vertical direction. A component along the vertical direction of the first boundary line is smaller than a component along a width direction of the base.

Described is a femoral component of a prosthetic hip implant. The femoral component can include: a neck portion; and a stem portion including a proximal end and a distal end. The neck portion extends from the proximal end, and the stem portion comprises a first solid portion and at least one additional portion including at least one of a hollow portion, a porous portion, and a second solid portion comprised of a different solid material from a solid material of the first solid portion. The first solid portion and the at least one additional portion are in a predetermined configuration. The femoral component comprises a unitary component that is formed by additive manufacturing of the femoral component from a 3D model of the femoral component.

An example implant device includes a base having a surface that mates with bone, and a plurality of tapered protrusions positioned on the base and extending from the surface of the base that mates with bone. A surface of the plurality of tapered protrusions includes a textured surface to increase area for bone growth. An example method for inserting the implant device into bone includes forcing the plurality of tapered protrusions of the implant device into the bone, and securing the implant device in place without cement due to the plurality of tapered protrusions cutting into the bone for fixation of the implant device.
