Small joint fixation

A method of joining adjacent bone includes providing a medical device having a first implant portion, a second implant portion attached to the first implant portion, and a driver assembly having an instrument adapted to form an opening in bone. The driver assembly is integrally connected to and removably attached to the second implant portion at a connection, distal from the first implant portion. The driver assembly further has a wire driver extending therefrom, distal from the first implant portion. The method further includes inserting the wire driver into a wire driver tool; placing the first implant portion against a first bone structure; inserting the first implant portion into the first bone structure; removing the second implant portion from the driver assembly; using the driver assembly to form an opening in a second bone structure, adjacent to the first bone structure; and inserting the second implant portion into the opening.

Robotic System For Ankle Arthroplasty

Robotic system and methods for robotic arthroplasty are provided. The robotic system includes a machining system and a guidance system. The guidance station tracks movement of one or more of various objects in the operating room, such as a surgical tool, a tibia of a patient, a talus of the patient, or a component of an implant. The guidance system tracks these objects for purposes of displaying their relative positions and orientations to the surgeon and, in some cases, for purposes of controlling movement of the surgical tool of the machining system relative to virtual cutting boundaries or other virtual objects associated with the tibia and talus to facilitate preparation of bone to receive an ankle implant system.

A total joint replacement system comprising a first and a second implant system. The first implant system includes a first implant having a first load bearing surface based on a first removed portion of an articular surface of a patient's first bone, and a first anchor having a first threaded region configured to be secured into the first bone, wherein the first anchor is configured to be secured to the first implant. The second implant system includes a second implant having a second load bearing surface based on a second removed portion of an articular surface of a patient's second bone, and a second anchor having a second threaded region configured to be secured into the second bone, wherein the second anchor is configured to be secured to the second implant.

An alignment guide for total ankle replacement surgery and a method of creating and using the alignment guide. The alignment guide has a surface that interfaces with a corresponding surface of a superior aspect a talus of a patient, and as second surface portion that interfaces with a corresponding distal surface of a section of a tibia of the patient. When the alignment guide is in position, it maintains the ankle of the patient in a preselected position.

Virtual guidance for ankle surgery procedures

An example method includes registering, via a visualization device, a virtual model of a portion of an anatomy of an ankle of a patient to a corresponding portion of the anatomy of the ankle viewable via the visualization device, the virtual model obtained from a virtual surgical plan for an ankle arthroplasty procedure to attach a prosthetic to the anatomy. The example method also comprises displaying, via the visualization device and overlaid on the portion of the anatomy, a virtual guide that guides at least one of preparation of the anatomy for attachment of the prosthetic or attachment of the prosthetic to the anatomy.

Talar Implant System and Method

A talar implant system and method in one embodiment includes an articulation component with an articulating surface extending upwardly from a first plane and configured to articulate with a tibial component, and a distal portion for implanting in a bone, the distal portion having a longitudinal axis and configured to be rigidly coupled with respect to the first plane at any angular position selected from a range of angular positions within a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.

ANKLE REPLACEMENT SYSTEM

A prosthesis suited for orthopedic implantation possesses a multi-piece stem component that supports an artificial joint surface that can articulate with another artificial joint surface in various ways. The prosthesis can be assembled in a snap fit and/or interlocking fashion that provides positive locking means without the use of screws or other fasteners. The prosthesis can accommodate fitment of a plastic joint surface made, e.g., from ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The prosthesis is well suited for use in an ankle replacement system that can be installed using minimally invasive intramedullary guidance established with respect to the major axis of the tibia by minimally invasive access through the calcaneus, through an incision in the bottom of the foot. The prosthesis makes possible the installation of a total ankle system using minimally invasive anterior access to the ankle joint for making bony cuts and to install prosthesis components.

METHODS AND SYSTEM FOR EXTRAMEDULLARY GUIDANCE

A system and method fare provided for preparing the distal tibia in an ankle replacement via an extra-medullary jig. An extra-medullary jig or C-bracket is positioned on the tibia with a registration reference and positioned with respect to a resection in the distal tibia via an anterior mounting block which is independent of the surface of the tibia. The mounting block allows the adjustment of the stem cartridge with respect to the registration reference such that the stem cartridge is properly aligned within the resection. The C-bracket is further attached to the tibia via an adjustable proximal alignment arm which attaches to a pin embedded in the proximal tibia. The C-bracket aligns the tibia, foot and ankle and the trajectory of the reamer, and is universal with respect to the left and right ankle.

A subtalar joint replacement includes a talar component and a calcaneal component. The talar component includes a talar fixation surface, a talar articular surface opposite the talar fixation surface, the talar articular surface having a first shape, and one or more fixation devices extending from the talar fixation surface. The calcaneal component includes a calcaneal fixation surface, a calcaneal articular surface opposite the calcaneal fixation surface, the calcaneal articular surface having a second shape that interfaces with the first shape of the talar articular surface to generate constraint across a subtalar joint, and one or more fixation devices extending from the calcaneal fixation surface.
