Surgical instrument and method of use

A surgical instrument for use in an orthopaedic arthroplasty procedure includes a shaft having a first end and a second end and an impactor head disposed at the second end of the shaft. The impactor head includes first and second spaced ends, two spaced impaction surfaces disposed at the second end, and a cavity disposed between the impaction surfaces. The cavity is adapted to accommodate posterior-stabilizing spines of at least a first tibial implant component and a second tibial implant component having a size different than a size of the first tibial implant component. Each of the impaction surfaces includes a first section with a contour that conforms to a contour of a bearing surface of the first tibial implant component and a second section with a contour that conforms to a contour of a bearing surface of the second tibial implant component.

When the first and second wedges are located between the tibial and femoral component, the first and second wedges align the first axle opening of the tibial component with the second axle opening of the femoral component for receipt of an axle. The guide includes a guide recess extending between the first and second wedges and a post extending into the guide recess. The guide also includes a bridge connected to and extending between the first and second wedges such that the bridge at least partially defines the guide recess.

A surface of the plurality of tapered protrusions includes a textured surface to increase area for bone growth. An example method for inserting the implant device into bone includes forcing the plurality of tapered protrusions of the implant device into the bone, and securing the implant device in place without cement due to the plurality of tapered protrusions cutting into the bone for fixation of the implant device.

The navigation system also provides information to the robotic system to guide movement of a cutting tool to remove material from the patient such that a cut surface is created to receive the implant. The implant is then robotically placed on the cut surface.

Surgical templates

A surgical template system for use in working on a bone comprises: a tool guide block comprising at least one guide aperture for receiving and guiding a tool to work on a bone; locating means comprising a plurality of locating members, each member having a respective end surface for positioning against a surface of the bone; and attachment means for non-adjustably attaching the tool guide block to the locating means such that, when attached, the member end surfaces are secured in fixed position with, respect to each other, for engaging different respective portions of the surface of the bone, and the at least one guide aperture is secured in a fixed position with respect to the end surfaces. Corresponding methods of manufacturing a surgical template system, methods of manufacturing locating means for a surgical template system, methods of fitting a prosthesis to a bone, surgical methods, and surgical apparatus are described.

Prosthesis and method for using prosthesis to facilitate deep knee flexion

The present invention provides a femoral prosthesis for a femur which can enable or allow deep knee flexion without creating excessive tension in the ligamentous structure of the knee. The femoral prosthesis includes an internal non-articulating surface, an external articulating surface, a medial condyle and a lateral condyle. The height of the medial condyle is less than the height of the lateral condyle. A proximal-posterior tip of the medial condyle is rounded and is shifted inwards relative to the native level of the proximal-posterior region of the femur bone to facilitate knee flexion. A method of mounting a femoral prosthesis on a femur is also described.

Customized patient-specific revision surgical instruments and method

A method of fabricating a customized patient-specific guide block is disclosed. The method includes generating a image of a patient's bony anatomy and an implanted prosthetic component secured to the patient's bony anatomy, identifying landmarks on the patient's bony anatomy and the prosthetic component, selecting a revision surgical instrument based the image and the landmarks, and manufacturing the customized patient-specific guide block including a customized prosthesis-specific negative contour shaped to match a corresponding contour of the implanted prosthetic component.
