Provided herein are microalgal skin care compositions and methods of improving the health and appearance of skin. Also provided are methods of using polysaccharides for applications such as topical personal care products, cosmetics, and wrinkle reduction compositions. The invention also provides novel decolorized microalgal compositions useful for improving the health and appearance of skin. The invention also includes insoluble polysaccharide particles for application to human skin.

The present invention relates to compositions and methods for improving the appearance of the skin. Compositions comprises at least water, glycerin, sodium PCA, erythritol, Carrageenan (Chondrus Crispus extract), xanthan Gum; hydrolyzed collagen, hexapeptide-9 and a physiologically acceptable medium. Methods comprise applying the compositions to the skin to improve the appearance of aging skin, increasing skin moisturization, refining skin pores and decreasing aging skin pigmentation defects.

A method of treating skin is disclosed. The method can include topically applying to a person's skin a composition comprising 0.0001% to 5% w/w of a hydrolyzed algae extract comprising exopolysaccharides from Halymenia durvillei, and 0.0001% to 5% w/w of a saccharide isomerate comprising an exopolysaccharide synthesized by Vibrio alginolyticus, wherein at least one of skin permeability is decreased, filaggrin production is increased, skin moisture is increased, occludin production is increased, or TNF? production is inhibited in the skin.
