Provided herein are microalgal skin care compositions and methods of improving the health and appearance of skin. Also provided are methods of using polysaccharides for applications such as topical personal care products, cosmetics, and wrinkle reduction compositions. The invention also provides novel decolorized microalgal compositions useful for improving the health and appearance of skin. The invention also includes insoluble polysaccharide particles for application to human skin.

The method can include topically applying to a person's skin a composition comprising 0.0001% to 5% w/w of a hydrolyzed algae extract comprising exopolysaccharides from Halymenia durvillei, and 0.0001% to 5% w/w of a saccharide isomerate comprising an exopolysaccharide synthesized by Vibrio alginolyticus, wherein at least one of skin permeability is decreased, filaggrin production is increased, skin moisture is increased, occludin production is increased, or TNF? production is inhibited in the skin.

A method of treating skin is disclosed. The composition comprises water-soluble ionizable metal and non-metal components, aqueous and alcohol-based solvents, potassium iodide and citrus essential oil, and is preferably provided as a non-aerosol spray product that is applied to the hair and scalp.
