AUTOMATED CONTROL MECHANISMS AND METHODS FOR CONTROLLING FLUID FLOW IN A HEMODIALYSIS APPARATUS
Automated control mechanisms and methods for controlling fluid flow in a hemodialysis apparatus are described. The methods can involve a controller receiving information from a pressure sensor in a control chamber of a reciprocating diaphragm-based blood pump and causing the application of a time-varying pressure waveform on a diaphragm of the blood pump during a fill-stroke of the blood pump. The controller can be configured and programmed to monitor a pressure variation in the control chamber measured by the pressure sensor and to compare the measured pressure variation to a pre-determined value. Based on such comparison, the controller can initiate a procedure to pause or stop a dialysate pump of the hemodialysis apparatus if the magnitude of the measured pressure variation deviates from the pre-determined value.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR OPTIMIZATION OF PLASMA COLLECTION VOLUMES
A plasmapheresis system and a method for operating a plasmapheresis system are provided by which the volume/weight of anticoagulated plasma that is collected is optimized. In one example, a nomogram is provided that utilizes the donor's hematocrit to calculate the volume/weight of raw plasma within a plasma product having the maximum volume permitted by the FDA nomogram. In a plasmapheresis procedure having multiple collection phases followed by a reinfusion cycle in which concentrated red blood cells are returned to the donor, the volume of plasma product to be collected is calculated prior to the start of each collection cycle to account for the donor's increasing hematocrit, thus resulting in a greater total volume of plasma product to be collected during the plasmapheresis procedure.
AUTOMATED CONTROL MECHANISMS IN A HEMODIALYSIS APPARATUS
Systems for monitoring fluid flow in an extracorporeal blood circuit are described. The blood circuit of such systems can include plod pump having a pumping chamber of the blood pump separated from a control chamber of the blood pump by a flexible diaphragm. The control chamber can be configured to transmit positive or negative pressure to operate the diaphragm. The system can include a pressure sensor configured to measure pressure in the control chamber of the blood pump, and a controller configured to receive information from the pressure sensor and to control the delivery of pressure to the control chamber of the blood pump. The controller can also be configured to cause the application of a time-varying pressure waveform on the blood pump diaphragm during a fill-stroke of the blood pump, and to monitor a pressure variation in the control chamber measured by the pressure sensor. When so configured, such controller can transmit a value representing a magnitude of the measured pressure variation to a display associated with the extracorporeal blood circuit.
Method for removing blood from an extracorporeal blood circuit under pressure control and apparatuses
A method of removing blood from an extracorporeal blood circuit and/or a functional device, each of which is connectable or connected with a blood treatment apparatus for the purpose of a blood treatment of a patient, after concluding a blood treatment session, the method comprising operating a blood pump in a second conveying direction which is opposite to a first conveying direction of the blood pump which is customary during the blood treatment, and an arterial line section of the extracorporeal blood circuit is or will be connected with a venous line section of the extracorporeal blood circuit.
Blood treatment cassette having a dented film valve and a blood treatment apparatus
The present invention relates to a blood treatment cassette having a cassette body, embodied as a hard part, and a film, wherein the film is connected with the hard part and covers the hard part at least partially, wherein the hard part comprises at least one valve seat or valve section or one valve base of a valve, wherein the valve is embodied to take, in addition to a first, open position of the valve in which the valve base and the section of the film positioned above it do not touch each other, a second, closed position of the valve when applying force on the section of the film and wherein the valve base, in its longitudinal extension, comprises or is a non-straight section. The present invention also relates to a blood treatment apparatus connected with a blood treatment cassette.

Method for collecting a desired blood component and performing a photopheresis treatment
An improved method for separating whole blood into components and collecting a desired blood component. The method allows a desired blood component to be subjected to centrifugal forces within a separator for prolonged periods of time, yielding a cleaner cut and higher yield of the desired blood component. Whole blood is drawn from a source and pumped into a separator, the undesired blood components are removed from the separator at rates so as to build up the desired blood component in the separator. The desired blood component is only removed after a predetermined amount of the desired blood component has built up in the separator. It is preferred that the desired blood component be buffy coat and that the method be used to perform photopheresis treatments. In another aspect, the invention is a method of performing a full photopheresis treatment to treat diseases in a reduced time, preferably less than about 70 minutes, and more preferably less than about 45 minutes.
