Radiation therapy systems and methods with tumor tracking

A radiation therapy system comprising a therapeutic radiation system (e.g., an MV X-ray source, and/or a linac) and a co-planar imaging system (e.g., a kV X-ray system) on a fast rotating ring gantry frame. The therapeutic radiation system and the imaging system are separated by a gantry angle, and the gantry frame may rotate in a direction such that the imaging system leads the MV system. The radiation sources of both the therapeutic and imaging radiation systems are each collimated by a dynamic multi-leaf collimator (DMLC) disposed in the beam path of the MV X-ray source and the kV X-ray source, respectively. In one variation, the imaging system identifies patient tumor(s) positions in real-time. The DMLC for the imaging radiation source limits the kV X-ray beam spread to the tumor(s) and/or immediate tumor regions, and helps to reduce irradiation of healthy tissue (e.g., reduce the dose-area product).

Material inserts for radiation therapy

A system for treating a patient during radiation therapy is disclosed. The system includes a shell, a plurality of material inserts disposed in the shell, where each material insert of the plurality of material inserts respectively shapes a distribution of a dose delivered to the patient by a respective beam of a plurality of beams emitted from a nozzle of a radiation treatment system, and a scaffold component disposed in the shell that holds the plurality material inserts in place relative to the patient such that each material insert lies on a path of at least one of the beams.

Systems and methods for quality control in image-guided radiotherapy

Systems and methods for quality control in image-guided radiotherapy are provided. In some aspects, a method includes acquiring treatment images from a patient using an imaging system, and performing a registration using the treatment images and simulation images acquired during a simulation process. The method also includes computing at least one similarity metric based on the registration performed, and determining a conformance of the at least one similarity metric to predetermined limits. The method further includes generating a report indicative of the conformance.

An object of the present invention is to increase sensitivity and position resolution of measurement of an arrival position of a charged particle beam irradiated during treatment. A beam monitoring system includes: a gamma ray detector that detects gamma rays generated by interaction between a charged particle beam and an irradiation target; a shield that is disposed between the gamma ray detector and an irradiation axis of the beam and has a plurality of slits; and a calculation unit that analyzes a detection result of the gamma ray detector and reconfigures a count distribution of the detected gamma rays into a distribution of the beam irradiation axis based on a geometric arrangement of the shield, the detector, and the irradiation axis of the beam. The calculation unit obtains the arrival position of the particle beam from the reconfigured distribution.

ADAPTIVE DOSE ACCUMULATION ALGORITHM

Techniques for adjusting radiotherapy treatment for a patient in real time are provided. The techniques include operations comprising: obtaining, during delivery of a radiotherapy treatment fraction to a patient, one or more images of the patient at a first rate; generating patient motion information at a second rate based on the one or more images obtained at the first rate; receiving, during delivery of the radiotherapy treatment fraction, radiotherapy treatment device settings at a third rate; computing, during delivery of the radiotherapy treatment fraction, dose delivered to the patient with a first level of accuracy based on the generated patient motion information and the radiotherapy treatment device settings; and determining, during delivery of the radiotherapy treatment fraction, a real-time measure of accumulated dose delivered to the patient with a second greater level of accuracy than the first level of accuracy using one or more prior dose computations.

Single-pass imaging and radiation treatment delivery via an extended rotation gantry

An example method of radiation therapy in a radiation therapy system that includes a gantry with a treatment-delivering X-ray source and an imaging X-ray source mounted thereon is described. The method includes rotating the gantry in a first direction at a first rotational velocity about an open bore and concurrently rotating an annular support structure at a second rotational velocity about the open bore, wherein the second rotational velocity is less than the first rotational velocity. While continuing to rotate the gantry in the first direction about the open bore from a first position to a treatment position, the method also includes generating multiple images of a target volume disposed in the bore using the imaging X-ray source. Upon rotating the gantry to the treatment position, the method includes initiating delivery of a treatment beam to the target volume with the treatment-delivering X-ray source.
