According to one example, an exercise system includes a vertical housing, a first weighted touchpoint coupled to the vertical housing and configured to allow a user to exercise one or more muscles on a first side of the user, a first weight system coupled to the first weighted touchpoint, a second weighted touchpoint coupled to the vertical housing and configured to allow the user to exercise one or more muscles on a second side of the user, and a second weight system coupled to the second weighted touchpoint. The exercise system further includes a control system configured to cause the first weight system to automatically provide a first heavier weight to the first weighted touchpoint for a first exercise and further cause the second weight system to automatically provide a second lighter weight to the second weighted touchpoint for the first exercise.

The adjustment assembly includes at least one selector for movement relative to at least one of the first and second weight sets to engage and select the weight plates in said at least one of the first and second weight sets. A locking assembly fixes the selector relative to said at least one of the first and second weight sets.

The carriage is attached to a first end of a cable positioned on a pulley suspended from an upper end of a vertical support. The vertical support is attached to and extends upwardly from the base. Pulling a second end of the cable pulls the carriage and the secured weights upwardly toward the upper end. To perform an exercise, a handgrip is attached to the second end of the cable.

The pulley assembly has a primary pulley cable having a first end coupled to the first cam and a second end coupled to the second cam. When the work arm is in a rest position the first and second ends of the primary pulley cable both extend from cable tracks of the first and second cams, respectively, at a tangent, and in particular so that the resistance mechanism applies a resistance force on the work arm via the pulley assembly immediately upon movement of the work arm out of the rest position.

The end walls engage plate portions and locking element portions of outermost weight plates of the free weight assembly when received in the cradle. Inboard surfaces of the side walls engage portions of weight plates in at least the first weight plate set to substantially inhibit the first weight plate set from moving vertically or laterally between the side walls. The configuration of the inboard surfaces of the side walls aligns the weight plates in the first weight plate set both vertically and horizontally so that central openings in the weight plates for receiving a selector shaft are substantially concentric.
