In certain embodiments, the bolt apparatus has a body comprising an expandable section and expanding means to displace the expandable section between a contracted position and an expanded position; and a cross-section of at least part of the body is non-circular.

The present invention provides a method for stabilizing a fractured bone. The method includes positioning an elongate rod in the medullary canal of the fractured bone and forming a passageway through the cortex of the bone. The passageway extends from the exterior surface of the bone to the medullary canal of the bone. The method also includes creating a bonding region on the elongate rod. The bonding region is generally aligned with the passageway of the cortex. Furthermore, the method includes positioning a fastener in the passageway of the cortex and on the bonding region of the elongate rod and thermally bonding the fastener to the bonding region of the elongate rod while the fastener is positioned in the passageway of the cortex.

Bone fixation system and methods of use

A bone fixation system is provided for use in the spine between vertebrae. The system comprises a first fastener configured to anchor into a first vertebrae, a second fastener configured to anchor into a second vertebrae, and a set screw to retain the second fastener to the first fastener. The first fastener includes a shaft extending along a longitudinal axis and a head. The shaft includes a first cylindrical body. The head of the first fastener includes a second cylindrical body defining a passageway having an interior surface. The passageway defines a longitudinal axis that is different than the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The first cylindrical body of the shaft and the second cylindrical body of the head are angled relative to each other. The second fastener includes a shaft and a head. The head of the second fastener is configured to engage the interior surface of the passageway of the head of the first fastener. The set screw also engages the interior surface of the passageway and retains the head of the second fastener in the passageway.

A compression screw for applying compression at a bone joint. The compression screw includes an axial screw body extending from a distal end to a proximal end with the distal end including a series of bone engaging threads configured to be self-drilling and self-tapping and the proximal end including a head which defines a radially extending shoulder. At least one proximal rotary cutting structure is defined proximally of the bone engaging threads. The at least one proximal rotary cutting structure is configured to be self-drilling such that a proximal portion of the axial screw body cuts into and advances within a bone of the bone joint as the axial screw body is advanced. A method of inserting the compression screw is also provided.

Bone implants, including methods of use and assembly. The bone implants, which are optionally composite implants, generally include a distal anchoring region and a growth region that is proximal to the distal anchoring region. The distal anchoring region can have one or more distal surface features that adapt the distal anchoring region for anchoring into iliac bone. The growth region can have one or more growth features that adapt the growth region to facilitate at least one of bony on-growth, in-growth, or through-growth. The implants may be positioned along a posterior sacral alar-iliac (“SAT”) trajectory. The implants may be coupled to one or more bone stabilizing constructs, such as rod elements thereof.

A pivotal bone anchor assembly includes a receiver having central bore with a partially spherical engagement surface adjacent a lower opening, and a shank having a capture portion at a proximal end that is uploadable into the central bore of the receiver through the lower opening. The assembly also includes a retainer comprising a compressible, open ring-shaped body having at least a slit or missing section, a center opening, and an outer partially spherical surface configured for pivotal engagement with the partially spherical engagement surface of the receiver. The assembly further includes an insert comprising a center aperture configured to provide access to the internal drive socket for the drive tool, an upper surface configured to engage the fixation rod, and a lower surface configured to transfer the downwardly-directed force toward the capture portion of the shank to lock the assembly.

Attachment devices and methods of using the same are disclosed. The attachment devices can be fenestrated. The fenestrations can control the flow of fluid out of and/or into the device.
