MODULAR BATTERY POWERED HANDHELD SURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH SELF-DIAGNOSING CONTROL SWITCHES FOR REUSABLE HANDLE ASSEMBLY
Provided is a system and medical device that includes self diagnosing control switches. The control switch may be slidable within a slot in order to control activation of some function of the medical device. Due to natural wear and tear of movement of a control switch, the distances along the sliding slot that correspond to how much energy is used for the function may need to be adjusted over time in order to reflect the changing physical attributes of the actuator mechanism. The self diagnosing control switches of the present disclosures may be configured to automatically adjust for these thresholds using, for example, Hall effect sensors and magnets. In addition, in some cases, the self diagnosing control switches may be capable of indicating external influences on the controls, as well as predict a time until replacement is needed.
FORCEPS WITH INTENTIONALLY MISALIGNED PIN
A forceps having at least a first jaw with a longitudinal axis is disclosed. The first jaw can include a body portion, a first flange, a second flange and a cam pin. The first flange can define a first cam slot with a longitudinal extent along the longitudinal axis. The second flange can be spaced from the first flange a distance transverse to the longitudinal axis of the first jaw and can have a second cam slot. The cam pin, with a longitudinal axis, can be moveably secured within the first cam slot and the second cam slot. A diameter of the cam pin can be less than a width between a first longitudinal edge that defines a first side of each of the first cam slot and the second cam slot and a second longitudinal edge that defines a second opposing side of each of the first cam slot and the second cam slot so that the cam pin is moveably received by both the first cam slot and the second cam slot. With the first jaw pivoted to at least a first position, the cam pin and first flange can be configured such that the first longitudinal edge is contacted by the cam pin but the second longitudinal edge is spaced from the cam pin. The cam pin and second flange can be configured such that the first longitudinal edge is spaced from the cam pin but the second longitudinal edge is contacted by the cam pin.
ROBOTIC ELECTROSURGICAL DEVICE WITH DISPOSABLE SHAFT
An apparatus includes an interface assembly and a shaft assembly. The interface assembly is for use with a robotic system and includes a first drive assembly. The first drive assembly includes a first slot having a distal recess and a transverse recess. The shaft assembly is removably couplable with the interface assembly and includes an end effector and a first coupling feature. The first drive assembly of the interface assembly actuates the end effector of the shaft assembly. The first coupling feature is couplable with the first slot of the first drive assembly to longitudinally fix the shaft assembly relative to the interface assembly.
MONOLITHIC CERAMIC SURGICAL DEVICE AND METHOD
A medical device and associated methods are disclosed. In one example, the medical device includes an electrosurgical forceps. In selected examples, one or more structural components of the electrosurgical forceps includes a sintered ceramic microstructure. In selected examples other medical devices, including a debrider and a lithotripter, include a sintered ceramic microstructure.
ELECTROSURGICAL INSTRUMENT WITH ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE MONITOR AT ROTARY COUPLING
An apparatus includes a shaft assembly. A sliding electrical coupling provides electrical continuity between components of the shaft while permitting movement of a second shaft component relative to a first shaft component at the joint. An end effector is positioned at a distal end of the shaft assembly and is operable to engage tissue of a patient. A sensor is positioned adjacent to the joint and is configured to measure a joint parameter indicating a state of the sliding electrical coupling. The sensor transmits a first signal indicative of the measured joint parameter to a control module. The control module determines whether the measured joint parameter exceeds a maximum deviation from a predetermined value. When the measured joint parameter exceeds a maximum deviation from a predetermined value, the control module initiates a responsive action.
ENERGY-BASED SURGICAL INSTRUMENT FOR GRASPING, TREATING, AND/OR DIVIDING TISSUE
A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending distally from the housing, an end effector assembly at a distal end portion of the shaft, and a drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a movable handle, a carriage operably coupled to the movable handle, an inner drive operably coupled to the end effector assembly, and a spring assembly operably coupling the carriage and the inner drive. The spring assembly includes inner and outer coil springs arranged in a nested configuration. Initial actuation of the movable handle slides the carriage such that the spring assembly transfers the sliding of the carriage into translation of the inner drive to apply a jaw force by the end effector assembly. Subsequent actuation of the movable handle slides the carriage to compress the spring assembly to substantially maintain a position of the inner drive, thereby controlling the jaw force.
Forceps guide tube
A surgical tool can include a handle, an outer tube, an end effector, an inner tube, and a guide tube. The outer tube can be connected to the handle and can extend along a longitudinal axis. The end effector can be connected to the outer tube. The inner shaft can be located within the outer tube and can extend along the longitudinal axis. The inner shaft can be connected to the end effector and the outer shaft. The handle can be operable to translate the inner shaft with respect to the outer tube to operate the end effector. The guide tube can be located within the outer tube between the handle and the end effector. The guide tube can include a conduit extending therethrough.
Surgical instruments and methods for performing tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and other surgical procedures
A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending therefrom, an end effector assembly supported by the shaft, a movable handle, and a drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a translatable drive member for actuating the end effector assembly, and a torsion spring including first and second legs. The first leg is configured to translate through the housing in response to movement of the movable handle relative to the housing. The second leg is configured to translate through the housing in cooperation with the first leg to move the drive member longitudinally when a force acting on the drive member is less than a threshold force, and to remain in fixed position, thereby tensioning the torsion spring and retaining the drive member in fixed position when the force acting on the drive member is equal to or exceeds the threshold force.
Medical instrument
A jaw assembly that includes a first jaw and a second jaw. The first jaw includes a first outer jaw member having an effecting surface; a first inner jaw member having an effecting surface; and an element connecting the first outer jaw member and the first inner jaw member. The first inner jaw member is moveable relative to the first outer jaw member. The effecting surface of the first outer jaw member is proud of the effecting surface of the first inner jaw member in a direction of the second jaw.
Manufacturing method of a grasping device and treatment instrument
In a manufacturing of a grasping device that is openable and closable and includes a first jaw having a first hole and a second jaw having a second hole larger than the first hole, the first jaw is arranged in between protruding portions of the second jaw. The second hole is located outside the first hole in a width direction of the grasping device, and a cross-sectional area of the second hole is larger than the first hole. A pin member is inserted through both the first hole and the second hole. The positions of the first jaw and the pin member are adjusted relative to the second jaw to predetermined positions. The pin member is fixed to the second jaw upon positioning the first jaw and the second jaw at the predetermined positions.
