Minimally invasive interbody fusion

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for distracting tissue. The devices and methods may include insertion of first and second elongated members into the space between two tissue layers, with an augmenting elongated member at least partially inserted therebetween to form a distraction device between the tissues to be distracted. At least one of the first and second elongated members may be formed of a flexible core member with a plurality of rigid veneer members spaced along the length of the core member. At least one of the elongated members may include a shaping member that automatically moves from a generally linear configuration to a generally less linear configuration. A deployment catheter may include a deformable distal end to allow augmentation of the tissue distraction device during implantation. An injection aid may be provided for introducing a filler material into an interior defined by a deployed tissue distraction device.

Removable inclination guide for an implant insertion tool and associated surgical method

An inclination guide for use with an implant insertion tool during a surgical procedure includes a unitary body having a clip configured to be coupled to a mounting surface of the implant insertion tool, an elongated riser extending from the clip, and an elongated indicator extending from the elongated riser to a distal end. Such a design allows for an inexpensive and lightweight inclination guide that may be easily and quickly adjusted after assembly.

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for intervertebral body fusion that provide more robust support within the disc space. Intervertebral body fusion devices can have a unitary monolithic body including a plurality of body segments interconnected with each other by flexure members. Devices can be configured to be inserted through an opening in a compressed configuration and then expanded within the disc space to an expanded configuration. In the expanded configuration, devices can have a greater mediolateral or transverse to the disc space footprint. This wider footprint provides greater support for the vertebrae relative to the size of the opening through which the device is inserted. Insertion devices for inserting, expanding and extracting such implants are also disclosed.

Hip implant device

A hip implant is provided that includes a metal acetabular cup to be inserted into an acetabulum of the pelvis, a femoral head and neck portion with a polymer femoral head molded onto a metal formal head base that is attached to a metal femoral neck rod configured to be inserted into the neck of a femur, and a metal main body shaft configured to be inserted into a femoral shaft region of the femur and secured by bone screws. The head base may have stabilizing features, such as dimples and peripheral mounds, over which the femoral head is molded. The main body shaft also has diagonal hole located at the center line of the neck of the femur to receive the femoral neck rod at an adjustable angle. The femoral head interfaces with the acetabular cup as a smooth plastic-to-metal spherical-surface joint.

Modular Bone Reinforcement

Modular bone reinforcement systems, bone plates, assembled bone reinforcements, and methods of reinforcing a bone are described. A modular bone reinforcement system includes a plurality of bone plates, each of which has a series of tabs disposed along at least one edge of the bone plate for forming a snap-fit attachment to a mating series of tabs of another bone plate of the plurality of bone plates to form an assembled bone reinforcement. A first bone plate of the plurality of bone plates has a first shape and a second bone plate of the plurality of bone plates has a second shape that is different from the first shape. The modular bone reinforcement system can include additional components, such one or more fixation devices, reduction devices, navigation aids, or other components.

Methods and apparatus for minimally invasive modular interbody fusion devices

The invention is a modular interbody fusion device for fusing adjacent spinal vertebrae that is adapted to be implanted in a prepared interbody space including a first modular segment having a width including a first rail extending at least partially along one side of the width and beyond a periphery of a body portion of the first modular segment, a second modular segment having a width and slidably connected to the first rail on one side of the width and having a second rail extending at least partially along another side of the width and beyond a periphery of a body portion of the second modular segment, a third modular segment having a width and slidably connected to the second rail on one side of the width and wherein the device has an expanded position in which the second and third modular segments are extended along the first and second rails and positioned in a generally end to end configuration spaced apart by the rails prior to implantation and an implanted position in which the modular segments are positioned in a generally side by side configuration that defines a unitary body that mimics the planar shape of the vertebra such that the device contacts and supports the adjacent vertebra.
