Orthopaedic implants including breakaway fastener
This disclosure relates to orthopaedic implants and methods for restoring functionality to a joint. The implants described herein may be utilized during orthopaedic procedures and may be incorporated into a shoulder prosthesis for restoring functionality to shoulders having advanced cartilage disease. The disclosed implants may incorporate one or more fasteners formed together with a main body of the respective implant at a breakable connection. The fastener may be deployed during a surgical procedure, which may improve fixation of the implant at the surgical site.
Annular assistance device
The present invention relates to a discal annular assistance device and the surgical instruments necessary for the insertion and removal thereof. This new device assists the annulus fibrosus following the exeresis of the nucleus pulposus of a lumbar intervertebral disc, to stop accelerated progression towards the discoligamentous instability of a vertebral unit operated on for a nucleus pulposus hernia.
PARALLEL JAW INSERTER
An interbody system including an implant and a tool for inserting and expanding the medical implant and locking the implant in place is disclosed. The medical implant may include an expandable body defined by a superior endplate and an inferior endplate that are hingedly coupled and may be expanded and lordosed. The superior and inferior endplate may include gripping protrusions that mate and/or directly engage with recessed jaws of disclosed surgical tool. The surgical tool may include a vertically movable jaw to expand and contract the implant when engaged with the gripping protrusions of the implant. The surgical tool may also include a drive portion that engages the drive feature of the lock screw with the drive end of the surgical tool lock the implant while in an expanded position.
MECHANICAL FUSE FOR SURGICAL IMPLANTS AND RELATED METHODS
Devices and methods for tissue and graft procedures are provided that are designed to fail under a certain amount of force, providing sensory feedback that a particular activity may be providing too much stress on a surgical implant. For example, a surgical implant can include a sacrificial element in the form of a filament designed to break when a certain threshold value of force is met or exceeded, while a second filament that has the ability to withstand higher values of force, is able to maintain the repair after the first filament fails. In other embodiments, the sacrificial element includes a filament engagement mechanism associated with a suture anchor configured to fail at a threshold value of force, and a second filament engagement mechanism of the anchor can maintain the repair after the first one fails. Many implants configurations are provided, as are various surgical methods incorporating sacrificial elements.
Mold for forming a joint spacer device or a part thereof
A mold for forming a joint spacer device or a part thereof includes a rigid container body having a first perimeter profile delimiting a first molding surface configured to shape a first portion of the joint spacer or part thereof; and a rigid cover provided with a second perimeter profile delimiting a second molding surface configured to shape a second portion of the joint spacer or part thereof. The rigid container body and the rigid cover are removably engageable to each other, at the first and the second perimeter profile, so as to delimit a cavity corresponding to the external configuration of the joint spacer or part thereof. The mold includes a weakening system on the rigid container body and on the rigid cover, making them separable into parts to enable the extraction of the spacer device or part thereof, molded therebetween.
HIP JOINT DEVICE AND METHOD
Method of installing a medical device in a hip joint of a human patient, said medical device comprising a first piece comprising a convex contacting surface and a second piece comprising a concave contacting surface for creating a prosthetic joint, said medical device further comprising a releasing member configured to in a first state hold said first piece attached to said second piece, and in a second state release said first piece from said second piece said method comprising the steps of exposing the hip joint through a surgical or arthroscopic procedure, fixating said first piece of said medical device to a pelvic bone, fixating said second piece of said medical device to a femoral bone, placing said first piece in connection with said second piece, and holding said first piece to said second piece using said releasing member.
Expandable interbody implant and breakoff screw
An expandable implant may include an expandable body defined by a superior endplate and an inferior endplate that are hingedly coupled and may be expanded and lordosed. The superior endplate may include a first core having a distal engagement surface and the inferior endplate may include a second core having a proximal engagement surface and a threaded screw aperture. The implant may include a threaded breakoff screw disposed in the threaded screw aperture and movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, for example. In the locked position, the threaded locking screw may urge the distal engagement surface of the first core into direct contact with the proximal engagement surface of the second core. When broken, the breakoff screw may comprise a recessed fracture surface.
AUGMENTATION DEVICE AND METHOD FOR ADAPTING AN AUGMENTATION DEVICE
The invention relates to an augmentation device comprising an annular cone surrounding a channel which extends through the cone from a proximal cone end to a distal cone end of said cone. The invention furthermore relates to a method for adapting a cone size of such an augmentation device.
Method and apparatus for minimally invasive insertion of intervertebral implants
A dilation introducer for orthopedic surgery is provided for minimally invasive access for insertion of an intervertebral implant. The dilation introducer may be used to provide an access position through Kambin's triangle from a posterolateral approach. A first dilator tube with a first longitudinal axis is provided. A second dilator tube may be introduced over the first, advanced along a second longitudinal axis parallel to but offset from the first. A third dilator tube may be introduced over the second, advanced along a third longitudinal axis parallel to but offset from both the first and the second. An access cannula may be introduced over the third dilator tube. With the first, second, and third dilator tubes removed, surgical instruments may pass through the access cannula to operate on an intervertebral disc and/or insert an intervertebral implant.
