The base assembly is attached to a bottom of the column assembly. The arm rest assembly is attached to a top of the column assembly. The desktop assembly is moveably retained by the arm rest assembly. The collapsible writing desk may rest on the base assembly, or rest on an end of the desktop assembly and an edge of the column assembly. A retractable handle may be extended to carry the portable collapsible writing desk for a notebook computer like a suitcase.

An insertable bracket is configured to hold a handle of a handle assembly in an extended position, extending away from the side of the chest portion at substantially a right angle to the side of the chest portion. The bracket is further configured to retain and hold a panel along a side edge of the opening of the chest portion, and with the panel resting against the extended handle.

A foldable tray includes first and second base sections (BSs), lateral side members (LSMs) and a locking device. Each BS comprises opposed lateral edges, an inboard edge and a rigid hard surface. They are adjacent along their inboard edges, and foldable along those edges between an extended position where the hard surfaces lay in a plane and a folded position where the surfaces are stacked. The LSMs are attached along the opposed lateral edges of each of the BSs and foldable along that attached edge between an upright position where the LSM is at a substantial angle to the hard surface of its attached BS and a portable position where it is either stacked with its attached BS or has a major surface lying in the same plane as the hard surface of its attached BS. The locking device retains the BSs in the extended position only when engaged.
