Surgical instruments and methods for selectively coupling to an object

Instruments and methods for selectively coupling to an object are provided, for example surgical instruments that can form a rigid connection with an object and also be disassembled for cleaning, sterilization, etc. One embodiment includes an elongate shaft with a longitudinal groove, a first partial circumferential groove that intersects with a distal end of the longitudinal groove, and a second at least partial circumferential groove formed distal to the first partial circumferential groove. The instrument also includes a sleeve disposed over the elongate shaft that includes a protrusion extending from an internal wall that is received within the longitudinal groove to constrain movement of the sleeve relative to the elongate shaft. The sleeve further includes a lock that interfaces with the second at least partial circumferential groove when the protrusion is disposed in the first partial circumferential groove to further selectively constrain axial and rotational movement of the sleeve.

Various implementations include rod reduction instruments, spinal fixation monitoring systems, and related methods. Certain implementations include a rod reduction instrument that is adapted for use with a spinal fixation system and includes a sensor configured to detect a load exerted by a rod reducer on a spinal rod, along with a reduction feedback system that provides an indicator of the load exerted by the rod reducer on the spinal rod.

Rod reduction assemblies and related methods

This disclosure describes example embodiments of rod reduction instrumentation and other rod and vertebrae manipulation instruments. The rod reducers can be used during the installation of a rod based surgical fixation system to help urge the rod into the fixation anchors. The reducers described provide various configurations delivering large reduction distance capabilities, strong controlled reduction coupled with an ability to quickly advance the reducer if desired, and reduction of bulk through the surgical corridor.

Coupling device for coupling a rod to a bone anchor

A coupling device for coupling a rod to a bone anchor includes a receiving part configured to receive a head of the bone anchor, the receiving part having a first end and a second end, a central axis that extends between the first and second ends, and two legs at the first end that define a recess extending in a longitudinal direction transverse to the central axis for receiving the rod, and a monolithic pressure member positionable in the receiving part, the pressure member including a rod support surface and an engagement portion to adjust the pressure member to exert pressure on the head. The engagement portion is positioned farther radially from the central axis in the longitudinal direction than a first portion of the rod support surface, and extends closer axially to the first end of the receiving part than the entire first portion of the rod support surface.

REDUCER LOCKING MECHANISMS AND METHODS OF USE
20230157736 · 2023-05-25 ·

Disclosed are reducer instrument locking mechanisms. They can be located near a center pivot joint of the reducer, thereby eliminating a ratchet at the reducer proximal end. The locking mechanisms can include a pawl or latch that travels with one handle from an open position to a closed position. The pawl can fall into a groove formed in an opposing handle such that handles of the reducer can be locked relative to one another, at least with regard to movement of the handles away from one another. When falling into the groove, the pawl can create an auditory and/or tactile indication that a sufficient amount of rod reduction has been achieved to allow for set screw insertion. After set screw insertion, the reducer locking mechanisms can be released to clear it of the groove and allow the reducer to return to its open position.

Rod link reducer assemblies, systems, and methods thereof. The rod link reducer assembly provides a manipulator rod having a first end, a second end, and an elongate body extending along a body axis between the first end and the second end. A post extends outwardly from the rod. A rod manipulating joint comprise an elongate joint rod extending along a joint rod axis, a first coupling clamp disposed along the joint rod, the first coupling clamp releasably connectable to the post, and a second coupling clamp disposed along the joint rod adjacent to and rotatable about the joint rod relative to the first coupling clamp. The second coupling clamp is releasably connectable to a shaft. A biasing member is adapted to bias the second clamp against the first clamp.

Modular surgical instruments and related methods are disclosed herein, e.g., for performing rod reduction, derotation, and/or set screw insertion during spinal surgery. An exemplary system can include an instrument body configured to couple to a bone anchor assembly to provide a modular platform for carrying out various steps of a surgical procedure. For example, the instrument body can receive a reduction instrument therethrough for reducing a spinal rod into the bone anchor assembly. A derotation instrument can be attached to the reduction instrument for performing derotation maneuvers or applying other manipulation forces. A modular driver or handle adapter can be attached to the reduction instrument and/or to the derotation instrument to facilitate rod reduction. Any of the instrument body, the reduction instrument, and the derotation instrument can include a working channel therethrough. A set screw or closure mechanism, and a driver instrument for applying the set screw or closure mechanism to the bone anchor assembly, can be inserted through the working channel.
