An articulation component (1, 100) is for a bone joint hemiarthroplasty implant having an intramedullary stem (50) with a socket (53). The articulation component has a proximal saddle (2, 110) for non-engaging abutment with a proximal bone and a ball (4, 104) for engaging in the stem socket (53). The saddle has a distally facing recessed surface (10, 110) for engagement with the stem proximally facing surface (55) to define limits of articulation, in one case a cone of motion of about 60 with minimal risk of socket dislocation. Also, the saddle has an enlarged lateral-most edge portion (11, 111, 211) on two diametrically opposed sides of the neck, for conformity with a patients' anatomy.

In one embodiment, the implant assembly comprises a humeral component, an adaptor fixed to the neck of the humeral component, and a glenosphere bearing component coupled to the adaptor. The glenosphere bearing component comprises a first bearing surface that interfaces with an articulating surface of the adaptor to allow the adaptor to rotate relative to the adaptor and humeral component. The adaptor and the glenosphere bearing component form a locking mechanism that prevents the adaptor from decoupling from the glenosphere bearing component while allowing the adaptor to remain rotatable relative to the glenosphere bearing component after the implant assembly is implanted in the patient The second bearing surface is configured to interface with a glenosphere component to allow the glenosphere bearing component to articulate relative to the glenosphere component.

The fastener extends from the mounting plate. The adapter coupling plate comprises: a third major surface; a fourth major surface opposing the third major surface; an adapter coupling hole extending through the adapter coupling plate and surrounded by the adapter accommodation hole; and an indicator located on the fourth major surface to point to the sizing indicia on the mounting plate. The adapter coupling plate can be slidable along a slot surrounding the fastener or a tongue and groove system connecting the adapter coupling plate and the mounting plate and locked via the fastener.

The implant can be inserted in a collapsed configuration and expanded in situ. The invention also provides methods for using the implant to facilitate arthrodesis or fusion of adjacent joint surfaces or spinal vertebrae.

The articular member may articulate with a humeral bone or both a humeral bone and an ulnar bone.
