Expansible intervertebral implant

Various embodiments of an intervertebral implant comprise a body extending longitudinally along a primary axis, a baseplate, a plurality of elongated arms having a vertebral support surface, the arms being articulated such that the implant has a folded-back position in which the arms are close to each other, and a deployed position in which the arms are moved away from each other, and expansion means between the folded-back and deployed positions, comprising at least two branches pivotably mounted relative to each other and attached to the elongated arms by guide means such that translation of the expansion means parallel to the primary axis causes pivoting of the branches and moves the arms away from each other.

Disclosed is an implantable artificial intervertebral disc joint replacement device for implantation between adjacent vertebral bodies. The device allows selective positioning of a disc implant element and comprises translatable surfaces, a mechanism for translation, a means for bone attachment, and an integrated disc implant. The device can be used in the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions of the spine in single or multi-level configurations. When implanted in a patient, the device includes an upper (cranial) component and a lower (caudal) component attached to the vertebral body above and below the replaced intervertebral disc respectively, with the joint implant integrated into the translatable surfaces. Following implantation, precise positioning of the joint implant within the intervertebral space with respect to the spinal axis is then adjusted based upon the particular anatomical and functional needs of the individual patient to satisfy spinal range of motion and stability requirements.

ADJUSTABLE ARTHROPLASTY DEVICES, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS

An arthroplasty system for replacing a natural articular surface on a bone may include an arthroplasty prosthesis and a bone anchoring component. The arthroplasty prosthesis may include a joint-facing side having an articular surface and a bone-facing side having a first adjustable attachment feature. The bone anchoring component may include a bone engagement surface securable to a resected surface of the bone and a second adjustable attachment feature. The first adjustable attachment feature may be configured to movably mate with the second adjustable attachment feature to movably couple the bone anchoring component to the bone-facing side of the arthroplasty prosthesis.

The application is directed to devices and methods where one or more magnetic or magnetizable implants provides therapeutic benefits to a patient. The implant may be useful for expanding the range of motion of joints or dynamically providing different responses to changing conditions in the body where the implant is placed. An electromagnet is placed on or in a bone on one side of a joint, and another electromagnet or magnetically active material is placed on or in a bone on the opposing side of the joint. The electromagnet may be continuously energized to relieve pressure in the joint space, or may be energized in response to forces applied to the joint.

The embodiments disclosed provide an expandable osseointegration bone fixation apparatus configured to be attached to an affected or fractured bone. The apparatus includes an elongated housing containing a cylindrically shaped intraosseous insert have an expansion mechanism. The insert further includes a set of inwardly angled tapers designed to be attached to a diaphyseal bone where a set of diametrically opposed congruent inserts are configured to incrementally expanded in opposite directions and cause an incremental force against the inside surface of the housing to increase compression to the affected bone.

An instrument for assembling an implant on a neck. The implant and neck being coupled via a taper having a taper axis. The instrument includes a frame having a distal portion and a proximal portion, the distal portion of the frame including a retaining member adapted to engage a portion of the neck and a connector adapted to engage a corresponding feature of the stem. The instrument also includes a force applier retained in the proximal portion of the frame. The force applier includes a screw having a screw axis that is coaxial with the taper axis, wherein the screw is adapted to engage the implant. As the screw is turned, the force applier applies a force on the implant while the neck is held in place by the frame, thereby causing the tapers of the implant and neck to engage.

An expandable implant is disclosed having an adjustable height for insertion between two adjacent bony structures or joint surfaces, for example between two adjacent spinal vertebrae. The implant includes at least one gear associated with at least one threaded shaft. Rotation of the gear engages the threaded shaft to expand the implant. The implant can be inserted in a collapsed configuration and expanded in situ. The invention also provides methods for using the implant to facilitate arthrodesis or fusion of adjacent joint surfaces or spinal vertebrae.
