Caffeine production method

The present invention provides a method for producing caffeine, wherein the method comprises: (a) combining a coffee extract comprising caffeine with an aqueous organic acid; (b) crystallizing the coffee extract and the aqueous organic acid so as to form caffeine-organic acid co-crystals in an aqueous phase; (c) separating the caffeine-organic acid co-crystals from the aqueous phase; and (d) extracting caffeine from the co-crystals obtained in step (c), wherein step (d) comprises placing the co-crystals in an aqueous solution so as to form a caffeine precipitate and a solution comprising the organic acid. Also provided is a method for producing a decaffeinated coffee extract comprising chlorogenic acids.

CRYSTALLISATION OF CHEMICAL MOLECULES

This invention relates to a method of forming crystals of chemical molecules. The methods are effective even when only very small amounts of a compound are available and can be used to explore the experimental crystallisation space including screening for optimal crystallisation conditions such as for polymorphic phases, salts, solvates and co-crystals of chemical molecules and to provide single crystals for structural determination of unknown molecules by single crystal X-ray crystallography.

Formation of high quality alane

Methods for forming alane are described. The method includes addition of toluene at a temperature above the crystallization temperature of alane to a lower temperature solution that includes alane adduct, ether, and toluene. Upon the addition, a crystallization mixture is formed that is at or near the crystallization temperature of alane. The alane of the mixture crystallizes over a period of time to form a high purity alane polymorph.
