Low headloss feed devices and control methods for tray-type vortex grit removal systems
An inlet arrangement for a tray-based grit removal system utilizes a set of separate inlet hoses to connect the vertical stack of trays to a horizontally-disposed inlet chute, thus eliminating the inlet duct utilized in prior art configurations. Each hose is configured to have about the same length and diameter, providing an essentially uniform influent pressure at the input to each tray. The hoses are directly connected between the trays and the inlet chute, where each tray may be formed to include a hose coupler of the same diameter as the hose. The inlet chute may take the form of a trough or tube (or other suitable geometry), with the plurality of hoses all terminating along a common, horizontal output face of the chute.

PROCESSES FOR ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION OF MULTIPHASE SEPARATORS, PARTICULAR IN REGARDS TO SIMULATED GRAVITY SEPARATION OF IMMISCIBLE LIQUID DISPERSIONS
The present invention is directed to systems and methods for evaluating performance, performing process control, optimization and design of gravity separation process systems that are used to separate immiscible liquid dispersions (e.g., water-in-oil, oil-in-water mixtures) and emulsions for two-phase (liquid-liquid) or three-phase (gas-liquid-liquid) systems. According to one aspect, the design, simulation and control of such systems is performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software that is configured for determining the separation efficiency of separators on the basis of the true geometry and multidimensional flow field and for a distribution of droplet sizes with the influence of the emulsion concentration on the rheology of the oil-in-water or water-in-oil dispersion. The results of the CFD simulations can be used to adjust input parameters of the separator to maximize the separation efficiency of the separator such that it outputs liquid streams containing minimal amounts of immiscible liquid dispersions.
EXTRUSION SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR SEPARATING SOIL FROM WATER
An extrusion system for separating soil entrained in wash water, e.g. from harvesting tuberous produce, includes a settling tank configured to receive a flow of soiled water, to allow soil to settle by gravity, and to allow clarified water collection at the top. A diffuser suspended within the tank converts the flow of soiled water into multiple transverse flows to avoid churning the settled soil. A sensor detects the level of settled soil reaching a predetermined setpoint, and in response the system actuates an auger and opens a pinch valve to force concentrated soil from the bottom of the settling tank.
