CROSS-LINKED POLYIMIDE MEMBRANES AND CARBON MOLECULAR SIEVE HOLLOW FIBER MEMBRANES MADE THEREFROM
A cross-linked polyimide of the reaction product of a crosslinking agent and a polyimide. The cross-linking agent having at least two cross-linking moieties and the polyimide has a plurality of polyimide chains having an aryl constituent with a moiety comprised of a reactive substituent. The polyimide has crosslinks from the reaction of the reactive substituent of the aryl constituents of the polyimide chains and the cross-linking moieties of the cross-linking agent. The cross-linking may be induced by thermally treating a mixture of the polyimide and crosslinking agent above about 150° C. to a temperature where the polyimide begins to decompose under an inert atmosphere. The membrane can be used for separations involving gases such as hydrogen and light hydrocarbons.
Method for biological or biomimetic channel-based membrane fabrications using layer-by-layer structure
The present disclosure describes membrane compositions and methods for preparing membrane compositions. In particular, the methods employ a layer-by-layer approach to membrane preparation. The membrane compositions provide significantly enhanced membrane performance over existing commercial membranes, particularly in terms of permeability and selectivity.
Graphene-based membrane and method of producing the same
A graphene-based membrane and a method of producing the same are disclosed. The graphene-based membrane may include a graphene-polymer composite, wherein the graphene-polymer composite may consist of an amine functionalized graphene and a polymer containing an anhydride group as a linker for linking the amine functionalized graphene to the polymer. The graphene-based membrane may be constructed of a single-layer. A method may include reacting a polymer containing an anhydride with an amine functionalized graphene in presence of a solvent to form an intermediate product; and thermal imidizing the intermediate product to form a graphene grafted polymer composite for use in fabricating a graphene-based membrane.
Hollow fiber membrane for filtration of liquids
The present invention provides an intrinsically anti-microbial hollow fiber membrane for filtration of liquids. The membrane comprises a plurality of porous hollow bilayer membrane fibers wherein the liquid enters from outside of the fiber, passing through the porous membrane into the lumen of the fiber and coming out from the hollow ending of the fiber, wherein this configuration provides a liquid outside-in arrangement and retains the filtrate outside. It means that membrane of the invention has built in characteristics to act against microbes in order to provide the use with a safe liquid free from microbes. The outer side or outer wall of the hollow fibers may be configured to become hydrophobic whereas inner side or inner wall of the hollow fiber membrane may be configured to become hydrophilic to enhance the water permeability to a great extent. The hollow fiber membrane may be configured to give it an intrinsic anti-microbial capability. A device containing above said membrane has also been disclosed.
Composite mixed matrix membranes for membrane distillation and related methods of manufacture
The present invention relates to a membrane distillation system comprising a flat-sheet composite mixed matrix hydrophilic/hydrophobic membrane having at least a hydrophilic layer and a hydrophobic layer. The hydrophilic layer comprises a hydrophilic polymer and inorganic nanoparticles having high thermal conductivity. The hydrophobic layer comprises fluorinated surface-modifying macromolecules (SMM). Also disclosed is a phase inversion method for manufacturing the membrane.
Multi-functional multi-layer hollow fiber membrane containing embedded magnetic particles
This invention relates to a dual-layer, multifunctional hollow fiber membrane having at least two layers that perform two respective functions: 1) a layer that performs a separative function separating a solvent such as a liquid or gas from its solute species; and 2) a layer that performs the function of generating a magnetic field. The layer generating the magnetic field preferably has magnetic nano or micro particles embedded therein to attract, capture and/or position paramagnetic draw solute particles to maximize their osmotic effect.
Hybrid polymeric hollow fiber membrane, hybrid carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membrane, and processes for preparing the same
The present invention relates to a polymeric hollow fiber membrane and a carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membrane, both of which have excellent gas separation performance, and processes for preparing the same. Specifically, the present invention relates to a hybrid polymeric hollow fiber membrane that comprises a glassy polymer containing fluorine and a ladder-structured polysilsesquioxane, a hybrid carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membrane prepared by pyrolysis thereof, and processes for preparing the same. The hybrid polymeric hollow fiber membrane and the hybrid carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membrane according to the embodiments of the present invention are excellent in gas flux and selectivity and can have a large surface area per unit volume. Thus, they can be advantageously used for separating gases with a high energy efficiency on a large scale.

The present disclosure provides a multilayer article. The multilayer article includes a) a microfiltration membrane substrate, the microfiltration membrane substrate having a first major surface; and b) a first layer having a first major surface and a second major surface disposed opposite the first major surface. The first major surface of the first layer is directly attached to the first major surface of the microfiltration membrane substrate. The first layer includes a first polymeric binder and a plurality of acid-sintered interconnected first silica nanoparticles arranged to form a continuous three-dimensional porous network. The multilayer article further includes c) a second layer attached to the second major surface of the first layer. The second layer includes i) a metal coating or ii) a composite coating comprising a second polymeric binder and at least one of metal nanoparticles or metal nanowires.
Chitosan-graphene oxide membranes
This invention relates generally to a chitosan-graphene oxide membrane and process of making the same. The nanocomposite membrane can filter water and remove contaminants without fouling like other commercially-available polymer-based water filters. The membrane can be used as a flat sheet filter or can be engineered in a spiral filtration module. The membrane is scalable and tunable for many water contaminants including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, and other organic chemicals. The membrane uses chitosan, which is low-cost, renewable biopolymer typically considered to be a waste product and the second most abundant biopolymer on Earth, thus making the membrane an environmentally-friendly product choice.
