This need is met by the filter component formed of a cylindrical nonwoven fabric having a center axis, and having a plurality of polygon-shaped cross-sections which are a same shape that are formed side-by-side at predetermined intervals along the center axis. Each side of each of the polygons is formed by a mountain fold part on a plane perpendicular to the center axis, and each vertex of one polygon is connected by a mountain fold part to each vertex of another polygon, respectively.

The filter media includes an inlet face and an outlet face, the inlet face spaced apart from the outlet face. The axial flow filter element includes an upper support ring adjacent to the inlet face of the filter media. The upper support ring circumscribes the filter media and supports an upper seal. The upper seal forms a seal with a housing when the filter element is received in the housing. The axial flow filter element further includes a lower support ring adjacent to the outlet face of the filter media. The lower support ring circumscribes the filter media. In some arrangements, the lower support ring does not include a seal.

A method for producing a 3D sponge based on nanofibers includes the processing steps of producing nanofiber based material, cutting the nanofiber based material in small pieces, suspending the small pieces into a wetting non-dissolving liquid, homogenizing the suspension to obtain a slurry with separated short nanofibers, freezing the slurry at a controlled rate and generating a solid templated 3D network of short nanofibers, and thermally, physically or chemically cross-linking the short nanofibers to improve the mechanical stability of the produced sponge.
