A metal coil compression device includes: a lifting device configured to generate a vertically downward pressing force; a cylindrical outer pressure barrel that is supported by the lifting device; a cylindrical inner pressure barrel that is located inside a peripheral wall of the outer pressure barrel; and a connecting mechanism that connects the inner and outer pressure barrels so that the inner and outer pressure barrels are vertically engaged and are supported relatively rotatably in a circumferential direction. The outer pressure barrel has an outer recess being recessed vertically upward from a bottom end. The inner pressure barrel has an inner recess in a peripheral wall of the inner pressure barrel, the inner recess being recessed vertically upward from a bottom end, and a coil pressing surface that makes contact with a top of the metal coil to transmit the vertically downward pressing force to the metal coil.

A method in accordance with the present application includes sending a raw tube from a drum to an unwinding side capstan while the raw tube is rotated around a central axis perpendicular to a winding shaft of the drum by rotating the drum and the unwinding side capstan about the central axis concurrently with unwinding of the raw tube from the drum holding the raw tube, on an inner surface of which multiple straight grooves along a longitudinal direction of the raw tube are formed with an interval in a circumferential direction, in a coil shape, to wind the raw tube around the unwinding side capstan, and drawing in which the unwound raw tube is drawn while the diameter of the raw tube is reduced, and then the raw tube is wound around the drawing side capstan to twist the raw tube and obtain an inner spiral grooved tube.

A method for mitigating the effects of coil collapse on hot strip mill coils. A hot strip coil is removed from the mandrel/downcoiler and pre-sagged to create an initial sag by allowing gravity cause the coil to sag in a first specific direction for a first period of time. Then, without coil eye support to limit sagging, the direction of the sag caused by the force of gravity is modified to a direction perpendicular to the first specific direction and gravity is allowed to sag said coil for a second period of time. The first period of time and the second period of time are chosen such that the initial sag created during the first period of time is substantially mitigated by the perpendicular sag during the second period of time. The hot strip coil being cooled enough by the end of the second period of time such that the rate of sagging of the hot strip coil has become negligible.
