The progressive die machine includes: a lower die; an upper die installed to vertically reciprocate with respect to the lower die; a material transfer unit to sequentially transfer a material in a length direction between the upper die and a lower die; a plurality of forming stations installed in the upper die and the lower die; and a rapid heating station installed to be adjacent to at least one of the plurality of forming stations.

A method and system for flanging a metal part is provided to improve the final dimensions of the part to a desired shape. Residual stresses from flanging operations can distort a final shape of the metal part. This disclosure provides an initial flanging step in which metal gainers are formed into the metal during a first flanging step. The metal gainers provide an increased amount of metal at select regions. Then, during a next flanging step, the metal gainers are smoothened or removed during that flanging step while the metal is additionally bent. The metal gainers help combat the residual stresses and allow the flange to better take the desired shape.

A method of manufacturing a press-formed article includes first press forming and second press forming. In the first press forming, an intermediate formed article is formed from a metal sheet by subjecting the metal sheet to processing including performing draw-forming on the metal sheet to form a peripheral wall portion, bending the metal sheet to form a convex flange portion, and bending the metal sheet to form at least a side standing flange main body portion of a side standing flange portion and a floor flange main body portion of a floor flange portion. The second press forming includes bending the intermediate formed article to form the convex flange portion to an inclined flange portion.

A conversion system wherein a crankshaft drives the motion of the tooling assemblies within a number of lanes is provided. The crankshaft is structured to move the tooling assemblies associated with less than the total number of lanes. That is, for example, a four lane conversion press could include two crankshafts each actuating the tooling assemblies of two lanes. In an exemplary embodiment, each lane has a single associated crankshaft. The conversion system includes a multiple press drive assembly with a clutch/brake assembly and a flywheel assembly. The clutch/brake assembly is structured to suspend operation of the press units while the flywheel assembly stores energy in a flywheel. When operation of the press units is restarted, energy from the flywheel aids the motor in bringing the press units to an operating speed.
