TOOL SYSTEMS FOR FORMING SEALED CONNECTIONS
20190084136 · 2019-03-21 ·

Tool systems for forming sealed connections are described. The tool systems include a pivoting jaw assembly and one or more insertable die sets that are received, positioned between, and engaged with the jaws of the jaw assembly. Examples of the die sets include clinch-type die sets and radial press die sets. Also described are methods of using the tool systems and die sets.

Compressor cover assembly method and forming tool

A method of assembling and retaining a noise attenuation device (30) within an air inlet (16) of a compressor cover (12) includes inserting the noise attenuation device (30) into the air inlet (16) and applying a rolling compressive force to the air inlet (16) using a forming tool (40). As a result, the air inlet terminal end (17) is deformed radially inward so as to form a radially-inwardly protruding lip (17b) about the air inlet terminal end (17). The radially-inwardly protruding lip (17b) is configured to retain the noise attenuation device (30) within the air inlet (16). The forming tool (40) used to form the radially-inwardly protruding lip (17b) is also described.

A method for joining composite rods with tubular shape includes internal and external collars applied to the ends of the composite rod and deformed via unidirectional compressive load applied by a clamp in the radial direction of the composite rod cross-section. The resulting plastic deformation of the metal collars and composite rod interlock those components to support both compressive and tensile loads.
