An arrangement for controlling flow speed in a mold for continuous casting of metal includes: at least two first front cores with associated first magnetic coils arranged on one side of the mold; at least two second front cores with associated second magnetic coils arranged on an opposite side of the mold in substantial alignment with the first front cores; an external magnetic loop connecting the second front cores to the first front cores, to allow a one-directional magnetic flux to pass through the mold from the first front cores to the second front cores or vice versa; and a control interface enabling independent control of two subsets of the first magnetic coils.

Li.sub.2O/Na.sub.2O is 0.6 or more, 1.0+0.05×Al≤CaO/SiO.sub.2≤2.0−0.35×Al, 10<Li.sub.2O+0.5×Na.sub.2O+0.8×F<20, and 1.00≤F/(Li.sub.2O+0.5×Na.sub.2O+1.46)≤1.24 are satisfied where Al is content by mass % of molten steel, and respective contents of the remaining elements are by mass %. A viscosity of the mold powder at 1,300° C. is in a range of 0.05 Pa.Math.s to 0.20 Pa.Math.s, and a crystallization temperature of the mold powder is in a range of 1,100° C. to 1,250° C.

Disclosed is a light reduction method for continuous casting of a bloom plain-barrelled roll-roll combination. The method comprises: firstly obtaining three-dimensional temperature field profile, a two-phase region, solid-phase region thickness, and solid-phase fraction of a billet, determining positions of start and end rolls of the reduction, and setting a reduction amount of each tensioner roll according to the volume shrinkage of the billet; in an interval f.sub.s=0.9-1.0 of the solid-phase fraction of the billet, performing a heavy reduction working mode; and in an interval f.sub.s=0.25-0.80 of the solid-phase fraction of the billet, performing a light reduction working mode.

Identification of variations or defects in a slab material, made from a continuous casting process

Systems, methods, and apparatuses are provided herein that track an integrated deviation of a physical property of a material that corresponds to a variation or defect in the material. In one embodiment, molten steel begins to solidify and move past an instrumented region of a mold. Sensors in the mold can detect a deviation in temperature of the instrumented region of the mold that signifies a variation or defect in the surface of the slab material as it solidifies. The systems, methods, and apparatuses track the integrated temperature deviation to more clearly visualize defects that may otherwise not be detectable by simply observing the temperatures of the mold and slab material in real time.
