Defect mitigation for recoating systems for additive manufacturing
Disclosed embodiments relate to recoater systems for use with additive manufacturing systems. A recoater assembly may be used to deposit a material layer onto a build surface of an additive manufacturing system. In some instances, the recoater assembly may include a powder entrainment system that trails behind a recoater blade of the recoater assembly relative to a direction of motion of the recoater blade across a build surface of the additive manufacturing system. The powder entrainment system may generate a flow of fluid across a portion of the build surface behind the recoater blade that at least temporarily entrains powder above a threshold height from the build surface to mitigate, or prevent, the formation of defects on the build surface with heights greater than the threshold height.

Devices, systems, and methods for monitoring a powder layer in additive manufacturing are disclosed. A method of monitoring a powder layer includes receiving image data corresponding the powder layer supported by a powder bed within a build chamber from imaging devices, determining leading and trailing regions of interest located adjacent to a leading end and a trailing end of the moving powder distributor, respectively, the leading and trailing regions of interest moving according to movement of the moving powder distributor, selecting at least one point located in the leading region of interest from the image data, determining first characteristics of the point, when the point is located within the trailing region of interest, determining second characteristics of the point, and comparing the first characteristics to the second characteristics.

PREHEATING OF POWDER BED
An arrangement for additive manufacturing by selective fusion of layers of a three-dimensional product from a powder bed including successively formed powder layers is provided. The arrangement includes a heating element having a powder layer facing surface, arranged in a powder layer heating position above a powder layer, in such a way that heat radiation emitted from said heating element heats at least a part of the powder layer before the selective fusion of a layer of the three-dimensional product from the powder layer.

An arrangement for additive manufacturing by selective fusion of layers of a three-dimensional product from a powder bed including successively formed powder layers is provided. SYSTEM FOR AND METHOD OF PRODUCING A WELD ARC ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PART WITH GRANULAR SUPPORT
The invention is a system for and method of manufacturing metallic parts through weld arc additive manufacturing with conductive granular media as support, to manufacture parts which have overhangs, hollow sections, a plurality of openings, a geometry having a discontinuous structure when formed by additive manufacturing steps that is joined, or a combination of geometries known in the art of manufacturing that could heretofore only be produced by cutting and assembling a variety of different parts. The system and method of the invention contemplate use of conductive granular media support material which may become at least partially incorporated in, or part of, a final part produced using the system or method of the invention.
SYSTEM FOR AND METHOD OF PRODUCING A WELD ARC ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING PART WITH GRANULAR SUPPORT

Three-Dimensional Printing System with Self-Maintaining Powder Distribution Subsystem
A three-dimensional printing system for manufacturing a three-dimensional article includes a build chamber, an overflow chamber adjacent to the build chamber, a motorized build plate, a powder coater including a vibration generator, a lateral movement mechanism coupled to the powder coater, and a controller. The controller is configured to perform a process to remove accumulated powder from surfaces of the powder coater according to the steps: (1) operate the lateral movement mechanism to position the powder coater over a location outside of the build chamber; (2) operate the vibration generator to shake the accumulated powder into the location outside of the build chamber. The location outside of the build chamber can be defined by the overflow chamber.
Three-Dimensional Printing System with Self-Maintaining Powder Distribution Subsystem
A three-dimensional printing system for manufacturing a three-dimensional article includes a build chamber, an overflow chamber adjacent to the build chamber, a motorized build plate, a powder coater including a vibration generator, a lateral movement mechanism coupled to the powder coater, and a controller. The controller is configured to perform a process to remove accumulated powder from surfaces of the powder coater according to the steps: (1) operate the lateral movement mechanism to position the powder coater over a location outside of the build chamber; (2) operate the vibration generator to shake the accumulated powder into the location outside of the build chamber. The location outside of the build chamber can be defined by the overflow chamber.
