There is provided a Co-based alloy material, having a chemical composition including: Al of 0.1 to 10 mass %; W of 3 to 45 mass %, the total content of Al and W being 50 mass % or less; O of 0.007 to 0.05 mass %; and the balance being Co and impurities, wherein in γ phase crystal grains as a matrix phase of the Co-based alloy material, segregation cells within an average size of 0.15 to 1.5 μm are formed, wherein in the segregation cells, γ′ phase grains within a size of 0.01 to 0.5 μm including Co, Al and W are dispersively precipitated, and wherein on boundary regions of the segregation cells and grain boundaries of the γ phase crystal grains, μ phase grains within a size of 0.005 to 2 μm including Co and W are dispersively precipitated.

A method for producing an additively-manufactured article includes: a step for feeding a powdered material onto a base metal, the powdered material being obtained by mixing a first powder containing a stellite alloy and a second powder containing tungsten carbide; a nd a step for irradiating the fed powdered material with a laser beam while weaving the lase r beam, and depositing a cladding layer, obtained by melting and solidifying at least the pow dered material, on the base metal. The step for depositing the cladding layer is performed such that 20≤A≤35, 2.2≤B≤2.9, and 5 mass%≤R2≤15 mass% are satisfied, where A is a laser heat input index, B is a powder feeding rate index, and R2 is the ratio of the second powder contained in the powdered material.

A composite structure is disclosed comprising a neutron-absorbing metal hydride phase contained within a matrix having a density of greater than 95%. In various embodiments the metal hydride is a hydride of one or more of the following: Gadolinium, Hafnium, Europium, Samarium. The composite structure is utile as a shield for fusion or fission reactors.

A method of forming an article includes producing a base powder including a plurality of base particles. Each base particle includes an external surface and a first material. The method further includes removing one or more oxides from the external surface of each base particle to form a cleaned powder including a plurality of cleaned particles. Each cleaned particle includes a cleaned external surface made of the first material. The method further includes coating the cleaned external surface of each cleaned particle with a second material having a greater oxidation resistance than the first material to form a coated powder including a plurality of coated particles. Each coated particle includes an external layer including the second material that fully covers the cleaned external surface made of the first material. The method further includes forming the article using the coated powder.

Provided are methods of producing cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs). The methods include combining a cobalt salt, a capping agent, and a reducing agent, under Co NP synthesis conditions including a temperature selected to produce cobalt nanoparticles of a pre-selected diameter, where the temperature and pre-selected diameter are inversely related. In certain aspects, the methods further include producing hollow gold nano spheres (HGNs) using the cobalt nanoparticles as scaffolds. Also provided are cobalt nanoparticles and hollow gold nano spheres (HGNs) produced according to the present methods. Kits that find use in practicing the methods of the present disclosure are also provided.

The production method for an alloy member includes: an additive manufacturing step of forming a shaped member through an additive manufacturing method using an alloy powder containing elements Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Ti each in a range of 5 atom% to 35 atom% and containing Mo in a range exceeding 0 atom% and 8 atom% or less, the remainder being unavoidable impurities; and a heat treatment step of holding the shaped member in a temperature range higher than 500° C. and lower than 900° C. directly after the additive manufacturing step without undergoing a step of holding the shaped member in a temperature range of 1080° C. to 1180° C.
