Lightweight cutting tool

A lightweight cutting tool, such as a reamer, includes a front cutting body, a front cutting ring, a center tube, a rear cutting ring and a rear machine connection member. An arm assembly of the front and rear cutting heads includes one or more leading arms, one or more trailing arms and a cutting head supported by the leading and trailing arms. The leading arms and the trailing arms curve in opposite directions. To reduce weight and moment of inertia of the reamer, a cross-sectional area of the leading arms and the trailing arms is largest proximate the sleeve member and is smallest proximate the cutting head. In addition, the front cutting body, the front and rear cutting rings and the center tube may be made by additive manufacturing. Fluid can be transported entirely through the reamer to the cutting insert/workpiece interface and the guide pad/workpiece interface.

One-piece reamer cutting discs including integral engagement and cutting portions are disclosed. The engagement portion may allow for torque transmission and alignment of the reamer cutting disc on a reamer tool body. The integral engagement portion and cutting portion allows for the cutting portion to be provided closer to the end of the tool body. The one-piece reamer cutting discs may be mounted on a tool body having coolant outlets that direct coolant from the tool body to the exterior surface of the cutting disc.

REAMER HEAD WITH FLUTE GEOMETRY AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME

A reamer head for a reamer includes one or more blades separated by flutes. Each flute has a front core region proximate a front end of the cutting portion, a rear portion proximate a rear end of the cutting portion and the middle core region therebetween. The front core region has a thickness, T1, the middle core region has a thickness, T2, and the rear core region has a thickness, T3. The thickness, T2, of the middle core region is greater than the thickness, T1, of the front core region and the thickness, T3, of the rear core region. A method of making the reamer head is also disclosed.

Cutting tool

A cutting tool according to an aspect of the present disclosure includes a shank, a joint, and a cutting portion attached through the joint to the shank. The cutting portion includes a core and a surface portion. The surface portion is disposed around a central axis of the cutting portion to cover an outer circumferential surface of the core. The surface portion includes a cutting edge. The cutting edge is disposed on an outer circumferential surface of the surface portion and formed in a helical shape about the central axis. The surface portion is a composite sintered material including a hard phase formed of a plurality of diamond particles and a plurality of cubic boron nitride particles, and a binder phase forming the remainder.
