A welded steel part obtained by welding a first sheet with a second sheet, at least one with a coating of aluminum alloy. The welding uses a welding wire which, after melting and cooling, constitutes a weld bead connecting the first sheet to the second sheet and being part of said welded steel part. The respective peripheral edge of the first and second sheets are in a joggled edge type configuration in which the peripheral edge of the first sheet is arranged above, and on or near the upper face of an end portion of the peripheral edge of the second sheet which is extended by an inclined junction portion, at least one part of the upper face of the inclined junction portion delimits at least laterally with the edge of the peripheral edge of the first sheet a groove receiving the weld bead, the inclined joining portion extending by a welding portion in longitudinal continuity with the peripheral edge of the first sheet.

A welding torch (1) includes a cylindrical nozzle (2) in which shielding gas is flown from an opening (3b), and an electrode (4) that is a bar-shaped body projecting from the opening (3b). The shielding gas includes upper shielding gas flowing in an upper region (3u) on an upper side of a central axis (C2) of the electrode (4), and lower shielding gas flowing in a lower region (3d) on a lower side of the central axis (C2) of the electrode (4). Atmospheric pressure of the lower shielding gas is higher than atmospheric pressure of the upper shielding gas. A method of horizontal welding with this kind of welding torch is also defined.

High toughness weld metals with superior ductile tearing resistance

Weld metals and methods for welding ferritic steels are provided. The weld metals have high strength and high ductile tearing resistance and are suitable for use in strain based pipelines. The weld metal contains retained austenite and has a cellular microstructure with cell walls containing lath martensite and cell interiors containing degenerate upper bainite. The weld metals are comprised of between 0.02 and 0.12 wt % carbon, between 7.50 and 14.50 wt % nickel, not greater than about 1.00 wt % manganese, not greater than about 0.30 wt % silicon, not greater than about 150 ppm oxygen, not greater than about 100 ppm sulfur, not greater than about 75 ppm phosphorus, and the balance essentially iron. Other elements may be added to enhance the properties of the weld metal. The weld metals are applied using a power source with current waveform control which produces a smooth, controlled welding arc and weld pool in the absence of CO.sub.2 or oxygen in the shielding gas.
