TOOL FOR FRICTION STIR WELDING

A tool for friction stir welding includes a tool part, a shank part and a cap part. The tool part and the shank part have a hexagonal frustum-shaped concave section and a hexagonal frustum-shaped convex section to enable movement of the tool part with respect to the shank part in a direction parallel to an axis of rotation while movement of the tool part with respect to the shank part in a direction around the axis of rotation is restricted, by the hexagonal frustum-shaped concave section and the hexagonal frustum-shaped convex section of the tool part and the shank part are fitted to each other. After the hexagonal frustum-shaped concave section and the hexagonal frustum-shaped convex section are fitted to each other, by the tool part and the shank part being covered by the cap part, the tool part is fixed to the shank part.

FRICTION WELDING

A method for friction welding of inter alia coarse grain superalloy components, involving conditioning a shear zone of components to be welded by; a) pre-determining temperature profile for which the material of the shear zone of the components approaches viscoplasticity but does not undergo undesirable phase transformations, b) introducing friction at one or both surfaces of the components to be welded to provide a pre-defined quantum of energy sufficient to generate a peak temperature of the temperature profile at that surface whilst simultaneously applying pressure to the surfaces which is below a pressure which will cause upset at the surface, c) withdrawing the friction and/or pressure allowing the heat to disperse by conduction through the shear zone; d) after the temperature at the surface falls below peak temperature, repeating steps b) and c); and repeating step d) as necessary until the pre-determined temperature gradient is achieved throughout the shear zone.

METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR CLADDING

A method of attaching a cladding element to a base element. A first inner side of the cladding element is positioned spaced apart from a second inner side of the base element to define a slot therebetween, and one or more heating elements are located in the slot. A non-oxidizing atmosphere is provided in the slot, and the heating element is energized, to heat at least portions of the cladding element and the base element to a hot working temperature. While at the hot working temperature, the first and second inner sides are engaged with each other, and one or both are moved relative to the other, for plastic deformation of the first and second inner sides, to subject the portions of the cladding element and the base element to shear stresses. The portions are allowed to cool, for recrystallization thereof.

A bridge member is installed in an opening of a water jacket, and a probe of a friction stir welding tool, which rotates about an axis parallel to a cylinder axis, is pressed against a central part of an upper surface of the bridge member. The probe is kept pressed against the central part of the upper surface for a predetermined time to cause side surfaces of the bridge member to expand and come into contact with both a cylinder wall and an outer wall. The probe is moved from the central part of the upper surface to the outer wall, or the cylinder wall, while the probe is kept pressed against the upper surface, thereby friction-stir welding the outer wall, or the cylinder wall, with the bridge member to each other, and after that, the probe is removed off the top deck.

Method of riveting

A method of inserting a rivet into a workpiece comprises moving the rivet and workpiece relative to one another, along a longitudinal axis of the rivet, so as to drive the rivet into the workpiece. The rivet is rotated about its longitudinal axis, relative to the workpiece, for at least part of the time during which it is in contact with the workpiece. The speed of said rotation, or the speed of movement along the longitudinal axis of the rivet, is altered at least once before driving of the rivet into the workpiece is complete. One axial end of the rivet has a tip for piercing the workpiece, and the rivet has a substantially cylindrical shank extending longitudinally from the tip. The shank has one or more surface irregularities.

The invention relates to a module comprising at least two electrical energy storage assemblies (20), each storage assembly comprising: a tubular element (21) comprising a so-called side face (23), and at least one cover (50) for covering one of the ends of the tubular element. Said module is characterized in that it also comprises a connecting body (60) for electrically connecting the two assemblies, the connecting body comprising at least one portion, each portion being separate from at least one of the storage assemblies (20), and the connecting body extends between the two storage assemblies such that the height of each storage assembly connected to the connecting body is equal to the height of a storage assembly that does not have a connecting body.

The apparatus and method allows multiple components to be simultaneously bonded to a central shaft or tube using linear friction welding in a single welding process. The method involves simultaneously pressing the work pieces radially against the central shaft or tube at the desired locations while the shaft is vibrated axially. The weld is facilitated by the use of a linear friction welding machine, which includes a number of fixtures and press assemblies to hold and press the various work pieces against the central shaft or tube and a vibrating assembly for vibrating the central shaft or tube.

Friction stir welding method and apparatus for structural steel

An object is to provide a friction stir welding method and apparatus that provide sufficient strength and good welding workability by advantageously eliminating plastic flow deficiency generated as a result of insufficient heating of workpieces. In friction stir welding for steel sheets (3,3) as workpieces, a pair of facing rotary tools (1,15) are inserted into a non-welded part from both one surface side and the other surface side of the steel sheets (3,3), the rotary tools move in a welding direction while rotating, and in addition, a preheating process for heating steel sheets (3,3) is performed by heating means (5) provided in front of the rotary tools (1,15). The configuration of the pair of facing rotary tools (1,15) and the surface temperature, area, position, and so forth of a heated region in the preheating process are strictly controlled.
