JOINING OF FERROUS ALLOY COMPONENTS BY FUSION WELDING USING A LOW CARBON STEEL INTERMEDIATE ELEMENT
20210146479 · 2021-05-20 ·

A method of joining two ferrous alloy component parts. The method includes hot metal casting a portion of a first ferrous alloy component part onto a first joining surface of a low carbon intermediate element; friction fitting a joining surface of a second ferrous alloy component part against a second joining surface of the low carbon intermediate element; and fusion welding with a concentrated energy source the intermediate element to the second ferrous alloy component part. The hot metal casting includes flowing a molten ferrous alloy onto the textured first joining surface, wherein the molten ally encompasses tabs extending from the first joining surface and filling apertures defined in the intermediate element. Then cooling the molten ferrous alloy such that a metallurgical and mechanical bond is formed between the portion of the first ferrous alloy component part and the first joining surface of the low carbon intermediate element.

Method for gas metal arc welding (GMAW) of nitrided steel components using cored welding wire
10974349 · 2021-04-13 · ·

A method for gas metal arc welding a first component formed of nitrided steel to a second component with reduced porosity in the weld is provided. A welding wire including a core surrounded by a tube is used to weld the components. The material of the core is formed of mild steel including 0.7 to 3.0 wt. % aluminum and 0.7 to 1.5 wt. % titanium. The material of the tube is formed entirely of low carbon steel. During the weld process, the nitrogen from the nitrided steel combines with the aluminum and titanium of the welding wire to form aluminum nitride and titanium nitride, instead of nitrogen bubbles which lead to high porosity. The method can be used to weld components used in automotive applications, for example to weld a ring gear and can of a flexplate, but alternatively could be used for another automotive or non-automotive applications.

An apparatus and a method for powder bed fusion additive manufacturing involve a multiple-chamber design achieving a high efficiency and throughput. The multiple-chamber design features concurrent printing of one or more print jobs inside one or more build chambers, side removals of printed objects from build chambers allowing quick exchanges of powdered materials, and capabilities of elevated process temperature controls of build chambers and post processing heat treatments of printed objects. The multiple-chamber design also includes a height-adjustable optical assembly in combination with a fixed build platform method suitable for large and heavy printed objects.

Vehicular differential device and welding method for the same

A vehicular differential device includes a differential case, a ring gear, and a welded portion positioned on an abutting surface where the differential case and the ring gear are in contact with each other. The welded portion is configured to join the differential case and the ring gear for integral rotation of the differential case and the ring gear around a rotation axis of the vehicular differential device. The welded portion includes a plurality of welding surfaces positioned at predetermined intervals along a circumferential direction around the rotation axis.

Additive friction stir deposition method for manufacturing an article

A method is provided for manufacturing an article. The method comprises depositing by additive friction stir deposition a wear-resistant material on a surface of a preform to provide an intermediate article. The preform comprises a first composition and the wear-resistant material comprises a second composition. The second composition is substantially different from the first composition. The method also comprises machining the intermediate article to remove therefrom at least a portion of the wear-resistant material.

CONJOINED STEEL AND TITANIUM VIA ADDITIVE MANUFACTURE
20210129222 · 2021-05-06 ·

A process for additive manufacture of an article including conjoined first and second metals, wherein the first metal includes one of steel and titanium and the second metal includes another of the steel and the titanium. The process comprises arranging an interface layer of a third metal on a substrate of the first metal, wherein the third metal is capable of forming an alloy with the first metal and capable of forming an alloy with the second metal. The process further comprises supplying a consumable form of the second metal to a locus of the interface layer and heating the locus of the interface layer in an non-reactive environment. In this process, the heating fuses the consumable form of the second metal to render a fused form of the second metal and joins the fused form of the second metal to the interface layer.

HIGH STRENGTH JOINTS BETWEEN STEEL AND TITANIUM
20210116009 · 2021-04-22 ·

A method of joining parts, where at least one of the parts has a faying surface defining grooves therein. One of the parts is formed of a majority of titanium, and the other part is formed of a majority of iron. The method includes providing a set of opposed welding electrodes disposed on a side of each part and applying pressure to and heating the parts via the set of electrodes to form a joint between the parts. A bonded assembly includes a first part formed of a majority of titanium and a second part formed of a steel alloy. The first and second parts having a bond that includes a portion of the first part directly in contact with and attached to a portion of the second part. The parts may be a titanium-containing differential carrier case bonded to a steel gear.

Enclosed Additive Manufacturing System

A method of additive manufacture is disclosed. The method may include restricting, by an enclosure, an exchange of gaseous matter between an interior of the enclosure and an exterior of the enclosure. The method may further include running multiple machines within the enclosure. Each of the machines may execute its own process of additive manufacture. While the machines are running, a gas management system may maintain gaseous oxygen within the enclosure at or below a limiting oxygen concentration for the interior.

A method and an apparatus pertaining to recycling and reuse of unwanted light in additive manufacturing can multiplex multiple beams of light including at least one or more beams of light from one or more light sources. The multiple beams of light may be reshaped and blended to provide a first beam of light. A spatial polarization pattern may be applied on the first beam of light to provide a second beam of light. Polarization states of the second beam of light may be split to reflect a third beam of light, which may be reshaped into a fourth beam of light. The fourth beam of light may be introduced as one of the multiple beams of light to result in a fifth beam of light.
