An embodiment relates to an ultrasonic additive manufacturing process, comprising joining a foil comprising a bulk metallic glass to a substrate; and forming a cladded composite comprising the foil and the substrate; wherein a thickness of the cladded composite is greater than a critical casting thickness of the bulk metallic glass, wherein the cladded composite comprises a cladding layer of the bulk metallic glass on the substrate and the bulk metallic glass comprises approximately 0% crystallinity, approximately 0% porosity, less than 50 MPa thermal stress, approximately 0% distortion, approximately 0 inch heat affected zone, approximately 0% dilution, and a strength of about 2,000-3,500 MPa.
SOLDERING PRINTED CIRCUITS USING RADIANT HEAT
Examples are disclosed related to forming solder joints between printed circuits by using radiant heat. One example provides a method of manufacturing an electronic device, the method comprising aligning a contact of a first printed circuit with a via of a second printed circuit. The method further comprises applying radiant heat via an infrared light source to a second surface of the second printed circuit, the radiant heat incident on the via to cause the via to conduct heat to solder located at an interface of the contact and the via, and after heating the solder to reflow, cooling the solder, thereby forming a solder joint between the contact of the first printed circuit and the via of the second printed circuit.
FABRICATION OF COOLING HOLES USING LASER MACHINING AND ULTRASONIC MACHINING
A method of machining cooling holes includes providing a workpiece in which a cooling hole is to be formed. The cooling hole, once formed, defines distinct first and second sections. The workpiece is secured in a fixture that is mounted in a first machine. In the first machine, a laser is used to drill a through-hole in a wall of the workpiece. The through-hole is spatially common to the first and second sections of the cooling hole. After drilling the through-hole, the fixture with the workpiece secured therein is removed from the first machine and mounted in a second machine. In the second machine, ultrasonic machining is used to expand a portion of the through-hole to form the second section. An abrasive slurry used in the process is drained through the through-hole during the ultrasonic machining.
Method and system for additive manufacturing using high energy source and hot-wire
A method and system to manufacture workpieces employing a high intensity energy source to create a puddle and at least one resistively heated wire which is heated to at or near its melting temperature and deposited into the puddle as droplets.
Method and device for etching patterns inside objects
Systems and methods for etching complex patterns on an interior surface of a hollow object are disclosed. A method generally includes positioning a laser system within the hollow object with a focal point of the laser focused on the interior surface, and operating the laser system to form the complex pattern on the interior surface. Motion of the laser system and the hollow object is controlled by a motion control system configured to provide rotation and/or translation about a longitudinal axis of one or both of the hollow object and the laser system based on the complex pattern, and change a positional relationship between a reflector and a focusing lens of the laser system to accommodate a change in distance between the reflector and the interior surface of the hollow object.
Ultrasonic additive manufacturing of cold plates with pre-formed fins
A method for making a cold plate includes the steps of positioning a finstock structure in a cavity of a substrate; and applying a cover to the finstock structure and substrate, wherein the applying step comprises ultrasonically additive manufacturing the cover to the substrate and the finstock structure, whereby the cover joins with the substrate and the finstock structure. The resulting cold plate assembly includes a substrate having a cavity, a finstock structure within the cavity, and a cover closing the finstock structure within the cavity, the cover being integrally joined to the substrate and to the finstock structure.
LASER WELDED JOINT, VEHICLE COMPONENT, MANUFACTURING METHOD OF LASER WELDED JOINT, AND MANUFACTURING METHOD OF VEHICLE COMPONENT
A laser welded joint has weld metal provided between a plurality of steel sheets. A chemical composition of the weld metal has predetermined components, and average hardness of the weld metal is 350 to 540 in Vickers hardness. In the weld metal, distribution density of porosities having a diameter of 2 μm to 50 μm is equal to or less than 5.0 pieces/mm.sup.2. In the weld metal, distribution density of oxide inclusions having a diameter of 3 μm or more is 0.1 to 8.0 pieces/mm.sup.2.
Lighthouse scanner with a rotating mirror and a circular ring target
The present invention introduces a scanning arrangement and a method suitable for coating processes applying laser ablation. The arrangement is suited to prolonged, industrial processes. The arrangement comprises a target, which has an annular form. The laser beam direction is controlled by a rotating mirror locating along the center axis of the annular target. The scanning line will rotate circularly along the inner target surface when the mirror rotates. The focal point of the laser beams may be arranged to locate on the inner target surface to ensure a constant spot size. A ring-formed, a cylinder-shaped or a cut conical-shaped target may be used. The inner surface of the target may thus be tapered in order to control the release direction of the ablated material towards a substrate to be coated.
TURBINE COMPONENT AND METHODS OF MAKING AND COOLING A TURBINE COMPONENT
A turbine component includes a root and an airfoil extending from the root to a tip opposite the root. The airfoil forms a leading edge and a trailing edge portion extending to a trailing edge. A plurality of nested cooling channels in the trailing edge portion of the airfoil permit passage of a cooling fluid from an interior of the turbine component to an exterior of the turbine component at the trailing edge portion. A method of making a turbine component includes forming an airfoil having a leading edge, a trailing edge portion extending to a trailing edge, and a plurality of nested cooling channels in the trailing edge portion. Each nested cooling channel fluidly connects an interior of the turbine component with an exterior of the turbine component at the trailing edge portion. A method of cooling a turbine component is also disclosed.
