Smoothing round internal passages of additively manufactured parts using metallic spheres

A method for smoothing surface roughness within an internal passageway is disclosed. In various embodiments, the method comprises developing a first sphere progression through a length of the internal passageway, each sphere within the first sphere progression having a first sphere diameter greater than or equal to a diameter of the internal passageway; and developing a second sphere progression through the length of the internal passageway, each sphere within the second sphere progression having a second sphere diameter greater than the first sphere diameter, whereby the inner surface of the internal passageway is smoothed, first by the first sphere progression and then by the second sphere progression.

Further, at least one second roll element, which is borne by the tool body, is rotatable about a second roll element axis and has a second outer surface that, in at least one second working section configured for a rolling contact with the workpiece surface, has a distance (r2) to the tool axis, which is less than a distance (r1) of the at least one first working section to the tool axis.

Machining/burnishing dual geometry orbital drilling tool

A combination cutting and burnishing orbital drilling tool may include an elongate tool body including a cutting end and extending along a longitudinal axis. The tool body may include a burnishing portion spaced from the cutting end and configured to induce residual stress in a side wall of a hole without removing material. The tool body may further include a cutting portion interposed between the cutting end and the burnishing portion. The cutting portion may be configured to remove material from a workpiece, thereby creating the hole, during an orbital drilling process.

An inner surface finishing tool enables machining of a workpiece made of a material machinable with a relatively large burnishing amount while reducing deformation at the opening of the workpiece or deterioration of its geometrical tolerance during machining of the inner peripheral surface. The tool includes a mandrel rotatable relative to the workpiece and includes a polygonal member, and a frame that is cylindrical and fitted onto the mandrel in a rotatable manner and has an axis extending in an axial direction of the mandrel and holds a plurality of first rollers and a plurality of second rollers rollable on an outer peripheral surface of the mandrel. The polygonal member rotates the plurality of second rollers to move inward and outward in a radial direction of the frame.

System and method for pre-conditioning pneumatic tires prior to mounting same onto a wheel

A tire pre-conditioning system includes a first mandrel, a second mandrel spaced apart from the first mandrel, and a controller in communication with the first mandrel and the second mandrel. The first mandrel is fixedly attached to a first shaft and including a first tapered sidewall. The second mandrel is fixedly attached to a second shaft and including a second tapered sidewall. The controller is operable to axially move the first mandrel and the second mandrel toward one another until the first and second tapered sidewalls are opposing respective beads of a tire, and supply pressurized fluid into an internal cavity of the tire to inflate the tire. The inflating causing the beads to move relative to mandrels while contacting the opposing respective tapered sidewalls to burnish the beads of the tire.

A method for roughening a cylinder bore wall to be coated of a component, at least one groove, running around the central longitudinal axis, and at least one associated groove web, are generated such that the at least one groove web, in a radial direction directed toward the central longitudinal axis, forms first undercuts for a coating which is to be applied. Axial grooves running in the cylinder bore wall transversely to the at least one groove are generated such that the at least one groove web, in a peripheral direction about the central longitudinal axis, forms respective second undercuts for the coating which is to be applied. An adhesion of the coating which is to be applied, in the peripheral direction, is improved, so that stress cracks or detachments owing to a different thermal expansion of the component and of the coating which is to be applied are avoided.
