The present invention relates generally to coated abrasive articles, such as coated abrasive film belts having improved strength and durability, as well as methods of making and using said coated abrasive articles.

COATED ABRASIVE ARTICLES AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME

A method of making a coated abrasive article includes: depositing precisely-shaped abrasive platelets into precisely-shaped cavities in a production tool; depositing diluent abrasive particles onto the production tool; contacting the precisely-shaped abrasive platelets and the diluent abrasive particles with a curable make layer precursor disposed on a major surface of a backing; separating the tool from the precisely-shaped abrasive platelets and the diluent abrasive particles; and at least partially curing the curable make layer precursor to provide an at least partially cured make layer precursor. Coated abrasive articles preparable by the method are also disclosed.

Shaped vitrified abrasive agglomerate, abrasive articles, and method of abrading

An abrasive agglomerate particle includes fused aluminum oxide mineral bonded in a vitreous matrix. The fused aluminum oxide mineral is present in a range from 70 percent by weight to 95 percent by weight and the vitreous matrix is present at least at five percent by weight, based on the weight of the abrasive agglomerate particle. The fused aluminum oxide mineral has an average particle size of up to 300 micrometers, and the abrasive agglomerate particle has a frusto-pyramidal shape with side walls having a taper angle in a range from 2 to 15 degrees and a dimension of at least 400 micrometers. The abrasive agglomerate particles are useful in abrasive articles. The method includes contacting the workpiece with an abrasive article and moving the workpiece and the abrasive article relative to each other to abrade the workpiece.

A system and method for a grinding disc, the grinding disc made out of three discs, capable of grinding in three positions such as the bottom, side, and top instead of only one position, the top disc and middle disc having an aperture such that a shaft having a washer and bar is connected to the discs by sliding the through the top disc whereby the washer is then received by the middle disc, the discs are then fastened together with the bar protruding from the discs whereby the bar may be connected to a tool such as drill, the grinding disc may then be used at multiple angles when connected to the tool

Shaped vitrified abrasive agglomerate with shaped abrasive particles, abrasive articles, and related methods

A shaped abrasive agglomerate particle includes a shaped abrasive particle bonded in a vitreous matrix. The shaped abrasive particles have a longest particle lineal dimension on a surface and a shortest particle dimension perpendicular to the longest particle lineal dimension, and the longest particle lineal dimension is at least twice the shortest particle dimension. The shaped abrasive agglomerate particle has a longest agglomerate lineal dimension on a surface and a shortest agglomerate dimension perpendicular to the longest agglomerate lineal dimension, and the longest agglomerate lineal dimension is at least twice the shortest agglomerate dimension. The abrasive agglomerate particles are useful in abrasive articles. Methods of making the shaped abrasive agglomerate particle and abrading a workpiece are also described.

Coated abrasive article and method of making the same

A method of making a coated abrasive article is disclosed. A backing has first and second opposed major surfaces. A make layer precursor is disposed on at least a portion of the first major surface. Magnetizable abrasive particles are disposed onto the make layer precursor while under the influence of an applied magnetic field. At least a majority the magnetizable abrasive particles extend away from the make layer precursor in an orientation substantially aligned with the applied magnetic field. Non-magnetizable particles are then disposed onto the make layer precursor while under the influence of the applied magnetic field. At least some of the non-magnetizable particles are disposed between the magnetizable abrasive particles. Then, the make layer precursor is at least partially cured to provide a make layer.

A method of making a coated abrasive article includes disposing abrasive composite precursors on a major surface of a water-soluble film. The abrasive composite precursors are lightly contacted with a porous fibrous backing, and the abrasive composite precursor are hardened to form abrasive composites. Dissolving the water-soluble film provides the coated abrasive article.

COATED ABRASIVE ARTICLES

An abrasive article is presented that includes a first set of shaped abrasive particles with a majority of the first set of shaped abrasive particles are oriented with respect to a backing in a first orientation. The abrasive article also includes a second set of shaped abrasive particles with a majority of the second set of shaped abrasive particles are oriented with respect to the backing in a second orientation, and wherein the second orientation differs from the first orientation. The first and second set of shaped abrasive particles are embedded within a coating layer on the baking.
