An aqueous boric acid dispersion includes boric acid particles having a median particle size range of less than 44 microns and a solids content of boric acid particles of 50% or greater. The boric acid dispersion also includes an effective amount of at least one viscosity reducing agent such that the boric acid dispersion has an initial Brookfield 2 rpm static viscosity of about 5,000 to about 25,000 centipoise and a three week aged Brookfield 2 rpm static viscosity of less than 250,000 centipoise, an optional amount of an alkali metal base, wherein the alkali metal base/boric acid mole ratio in the boric acid dispersion ranges from zero to about 0.01; and the balance water. The boric acid dispersion can be used in the manufacture of wood products like oriented strand board, medium density fiberboard, and particle board as well as to coat wood products to improve their fire retardancy.

Fire retardant composition for treatment of various wood products, method of producing the same and uses thereof. The compositions comprise an aqueous solution of bisphosphonate selected from 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid, an alkanol amine, and optionally an alkaline agent, the composition having a pH in the range of 4.0 to 7.0. The composition can be produced by mixing together 30 to 50 parts by weight of 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid; 1 to 10 parts by weight of an alkanol amine or mixture thereof, said alkanol amine being added in free form; and optionally 0.1 to 40 part by weight of an alkaline agent; and water. The compositions can be used for protecting wood not only against fire but also against mould, rot, blue stain, insect such as termite attacks on wood, dimensional changes, or a combination thereof due to environmental influence.

The present disclosure provides a method for preparing a piezoresistive sensor material, including: preparing a wood fiber aerogel; conducting dopamine self-polymerization on the surface of the aerogel to obtain a wood fiber-based hydrogel; soaking the wood fiber-based hydrogel in a nano conductive phase suspension or a nano conductive phase precursor to form a conductive phase-loaded wood fiber-based hydrogel; subjecting the conductive phase-loaded wood fiber-based hydrogel to reaction with an aqueous solution including a polyelectrolyte monomer, a crosslinker, an initiator and a catalyst to form a conductive phase-wood fiber-based hydrogel composite; and complexing the composite with metal ions. The present disclosure further discloses a piezoresistive sensor including the sensor material, and a preparation method thereof. The sensor material prepared by the method of the present disclosure has excellent mechanical strength and ionic conductivity, and a sensor further prepared has extremely-high sensitivity.

Methods of conferring fire retardancy to wood and fire-retardant wood products

A process is provided for treating wood products including lumber, plywood and other engineered wood products comprising the steps of applying an aqueous fire-retardant impregnate and applying a coating to the surface of the wood product. In one embodiment, said process confers fire-retardant properties to the wood products sufficient to pass the extended burn test of ASTM E-84. The present invention also provides fire retardant wood products.

The modification arrangement is configured for heating the hygroscopic material in the modification unit (202) to extract water from it and, in response to opening of the control valve (205), leading fluid from the fluid container through said at least one fluid aperture (203) into the modification unit (202). The modification arrangement further comprises a treatment agent (207) added to the fluid so that the treatment agent (207) is absorbed into the hygroscopic material and modifies it. The treatment agent (207) includes at least one of the following ingredients: a preservative, a dye, a pigment, an aroma, an odour eliminator, a pesticide, an impregnation ingredient, or a fire retardant.

Also disclosed are compositions prepared by the method. Also disclosed is a method of treating a substrate, such as lumber, comprising applying the compositions and substrates treated by the method.
