GREEN PROCESS FOR MODIFYING WOOD
This invention relates to a process for modifying wood. The process comprises treating the wood with an impregnating solution comprising an alkali metal (or alkaline earth metal) silicate, under conditions sufficient to impregnate the wood with one or more of the components of the impregnating solution. The process can comprise an optional second impregnation with a second impregnating solution. The process also comprises adding gaseous carbon dioxide to the treated wood, in the absence or presence of water, under pressure ranging from about 2 to about 12 bars, thereby lowering the pH of the treated wood to about 11 or below, to stabilize and/or fix the components of the impregnating solution in the wood. The process is green, non-toxic, and the resulting modified wood or wood product can be used across all primary construction and infrastructure applications.
Radio frequency treatment to phytosanitize wood packaging materials used in international shipping
A method for treating wood packaging materials using Radio Frequency heating includes the steps of heating wood packaging materials using RF heating and applying a pressure before the heating or incrementally applying a pressure during the heating until a temperature of the wood packaging materials reaches at least 60 C. and that temperature is maintained for at least 1 minute.
Method and formulation for the treatment of timber
According to the present invention there is provided a method of treating timber with a creosote-containing preservative formulation adapted for use at substantially ambient temperature. The formulation comprises: creosote; one or more surfactants such that when diluted with a predetermined quantity of water, the creosote is present as an oil-in-water macroemulsion or microemulsion; and optionally, an anti-foaming agent and/or a fire retardant. It is found empirically that the inventive concentrate allows for the use of creosote, a known-effective biocide, without many of the drawbacks inherent in such use.
ELECTRON BEAM TREATMENT FOR INVASIVE PESTS
A system and method for the treatment of invasive pests includes an irradiation device that can generate an electron beam that is applicable to a tree infected by an invasive pest, wherein the electron beam provides an in-situ treatment for the tree infected by the invasive pest by killing the invasive pest via electron beam irradiation. One or more temperature sensors can be used to track the internal temperature of a tree surrogate. A differential temperature difference tracked by temperature sensor can be used to ensure that a reduction in temperature of the tree is attributable to the electron beam rather than increase in heat.
METHODS FOR ENHANCING THE PRESERVATION OF CELLULOSIC MATERIALS AND CELLULOSIC MATERIALS PREPARED THEREBY
Methods for treating cellulosic materials comprising introducing a liquid treating composition into the cellulosic material, the treating composition comprising a solution prepared from at least: (i) one or more of a copper amine complex or copper ammine complex, such as copper tetraamine carbonate, (ii) one or more of ammonia or a water-soluble amine and (iii) water; and exposing the cellulosic material provided thereby to carbon dioxide and/or carbonic acid to provide treated cellulosic material, and treated cellulosic materials prepared thereby.
Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor containing compositions
A composition containing succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor and a potentiator has been discovered to enhance the activity of the succinate dehydrogenase such that the amount of the succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor need to effectively treat a microbial substance can be reduced substantially. The compositions may be used as additives for paints and coatings, and protecting crops, seeds, wallboard, metal working fluids, wood from mold, fungi and other microbes.
Wood Treatment Device for the Pressure-Free Treatment of Wood and a Pressure-Free Method for Treating Wood
The present invention relates to a wood treatment device (1) for treating wood, and to a method for treating wood. Said wood treatment device (1) comprises a cylindrical hollow body (2) having inner end which is inside the wood when in use, and an outer end facing away from the inner end and at least one outlet opening (4). The cylindrical hollow body (2) comprises a receiving space (20) which is designed to receive a carrier material (20) containing a wood treatment agent. Said wood treatment device (1) also comprises a thrust pin (10) which extends along the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical hollow body (2), and which can be moved outside of the cylindrical hollow body (2) on the outer end. Said thrust pin (10) comprises at least one closure section (11, 12) which closes at least one outlet opening when the wood treatment device (1) is not in use, and when the wood treatment device (1) is in use, the at least one outlet opening is released after moving and the receiving chamber is brought into contact with the wood.
Methods for enhancing the preservation of cellulosic materials and cellulosic materials prepared thereby
Methods for treating cellulosic materials comprising introducing a liquid treating composition into the cellulosic material, the treating composition comprising an aqueous alkaline copper-containing solution comprising copper tetraammine carbonate; and exposing the cellulosic material provided thereby to carbon dioxide to provide treated cellulosic material.
Antimicrobial composition for protecting wood
A multifunctional broad spectrum antimicrobial composition is described. The composition can be incorporated into a wood preservative, or used as an additive to provide antimicrobial properties to water-based wood coatings. The composition is a concentrated water-miscible emulsion containing 3-iodo-2-propynyl N-butylcarbamate (IPBC), carbendazim (BCM) and propiconazole (PPCZ), and has antimicrobial activity against a wide variety of fungal organisms, including surface molds, blue stain fungi and wood rotting fungi. The composition can act as an in-can preservative and is useful for antimicrobial protection of wood and wood-based substrates.
SOLVENT-BORNE WOOD PRESERVATIVE COMPOSITIONS
Wood preservative compositions comprising a particulate copper compound in a solvent carrier with low aromatic content. Particulate copper dispersions in this composition demonstrated superior stability, and wood treated with the composition is protected from attack by wood decay fungi and termites. The invention is also directed to wood preservative compositions comprising: (a.) a biodegradable organic solvent carrier selected from the group consisting of vegetable oil, renewable resource oil, and biodiesel; (b.) a dispersion of solid particles of a metal compound having a particle size between about 0.005 microns to about 10 microns; (c.) an organic biocide; and (d.) a dispersant; ratio of the dispersant to the metal compound is from about 1:500 to about 100:1 (wt/wt). The invention is also directed to compositions comprising penflufen and solvent carriers. The invention is also directed to methods of treating wood using the compositions, and wood treated with the disclosed compositions and methods.
