ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED STRUCTURE AND METHOD FOR MAKING THE SAME

An additively manufactured structure and methods for making and using same. An object can be printed at least partially on an attachment portion. The attachment portion can be bonded to the object upon the printing. The object does not need to be removed from the attachment portion. The need of providing a print surface to allow easy removal of the object is eliminated. The object can be a flat panel and can eliminate the need of printing a large flat layer using additive manufacturing. The attachment portion can be cut prior to the printing, so no trimming needs to be performed after the printing. The attachment portion can be made of a material that has one or more selected properties to expand functionalities of the object. A secondary operation for attaching the attachment portion to the object after the printing can be eliminated.

Polymer-hybrid carbon filler composite and method for preparing the same

A polyamide/hybrid carbon filler composite is disclosed. The composite includes a polyamide as a matrix and a hybrid carbon filler dispersed in and bonded to the polyamide matrix. The hybrid carbon filler is composed of a nano carbon and a carbon fiber. Also disclosed is a method for preparing the polyamide/hybrid carbon filler. The method includes simultaneously subjecting a mixture of a polyamide and a hybrid carbon filler to mechanofusion and plasma treatments.

A composite article is comprised of coal dust, as defined herein, and a polymer derived ceramic material that is pyrolyzed in a substantially non-oxidizing atmosphere. For example, the composite article may be made of a mixture of the coal dust and polymer derived ceramic, from particles formed of a mixture of coal dust and polymer derived ceramic or from complex particle composites comprising a plurality of particles formed of a mixture of coal dust and polymer derived ceramic.

DISPERSED FIBER MAT FORMATION

A process and system are provided for introducing chopped and dispersed carbon fibers on an automated production line amenable for inclusion in molding compositions, including the debundling of many carbon fibers collectively forming a tow into dispersed chopped carbon fibers that form a filler that undergoes plasma treatment prior to introducing coating silanes to uniformly increase bonding sites for coupling to a thermoset matrix. By exposing carbon tow to a plasma discharge, the carbon tow debundles and is used to form sheets of molding compositions with chopped dispersed fibers added to the composition, as the sheets move along a conveyor belt on the automated production line and at least one plasma generator mounted above the conveyor belt ionizes the carbon fibers. With resort to deionized air to mix plasma-treated chopped fibers, still further dispersion results.
