Surfaces having tunable asperities and method
This application present structures having surfaces with several multivariate and single property engineering applications that are associated with the surface and may be altered by the surface texture or tunable asperities themselves. Depending on the objective of the application, the tunable asperities address the energy requirement for an objective such as gripping or smooth-movement, as well as describes the critical conditions when slippage cannot be prevented. The use in several other energy intensive applications is also discussed as well as for solar, communication altering and color/hue manipulation objectives.

PLASMA PROCESSING DEVICE
An antenna conductor is cooled to stably generate plasma, and unexpected fluctuation in the electrostatic capacity of a variable capacitor connected to the antenna conductor is suppressed while cooling the variable capacitor. A plasma processing device which generates plasma in a vacuum container and processes a substrate by using the plasma is provided. The plasma processing device includes: an antenna conductor through which a high-frequency current is caused to flow to generate plasma, and a variable capacitor which is electrically connected to the antenna conductor. The antenna conductor has a flow path in which a cooling liquid flows. A dielectric of the variable capacitor is constituted of the cooling liquid flowing through the antenna conductor.
SURFACE MODIFICATION OF POLYMER FOAMS USING PLASMA
An embodiment includes a system comprising: a monolithic shape memory polymer (SMP) foam having first and second states; wherein the SMP foam includes: (a) polyurethane, (b) an inner half portion having inner reticulated cells defined by inner struts, (c) an outer half portion, having outer reticulated cells defined by outer struts, surrounding the inner portion in a plane that provides a cross-section of the SMP foam, (d) hydroxyl groups chemically bound to outer surfaces of both the inner and outer struts. Other embodiments are discussed herein.

Low temperature, nanostructured ceramic coatings
A substrate subject to degradation at temperatures above 100 C. is coated with a nanostructured ceramic coating having a thickness in excess of 100 nm, formed on a surface of the substrate, wherein a process temperature for deposition of the nanostructured coating does not exceed 90 C. The coating may be photocatalytic, photovoltaic, or piezoelectric. The coating, when moistened and exposed to ultraviolet light or sunlight, advantageously generates free radicals, which may be biocidal, deodorizing, or assist in degradation of surface deposits on the substrate after use. The substrate may be biological or organic, and may have a metallic or conductive intermediate layer.
LAMINATE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING LAMINATE
A method for producing a laminate, the method comprising at least a pretreatment step of pretreating a surface of a substrate made of a plastic film by reactive ion etching so that the maximum displacement of the substrate surface measured by local thermal analysis is 300 nm or more, and a lamination step of laminating a thermoplastic resin layer made of a material different from that of the substrate on the pretreated surface of the substrate; wherein the plastic film is a polyethylene terephthalate film.
Manufacturing process for making a dome element provided with thermal protection for a solid propellant rocket engine
For producing a dome-shaped element (2) provided with thermal protection for a solid propellant rocket engine, a coupling annular body (4) is arranged in a mold (5) and has a surface (20) that is clean and activated, by an atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment, before depositing a primer layer (26) and an adhesive layer (27) on the surface (20); ablative material is then automatically applied to the adhesive layer and to an area (17) of the mold (5) so as to form a series of superimposed layers (30).
