Method and apparatus for fabricating a composite object

A method for fabricating a composite object with a computer-controlled apparatus, and the apparatus therefor. The comprises a reservoir containing liquid, curable first material, means to selectively solidify the first material and means to selectively deposit a second material. The method involves the steps of selectively depositing portions of the second material, and selectively solidifying portions of the first material, such that the solidified portions of the first material and the deposited portions of the second material form the composite object.

An annulus filler for mounting to a rotor disc in a gas turbine engine includes a body portion having a top wall arranged to bridge the gap between two adjacent blades extending from the rotor disc and to define an air flow surface for air passing between the blades; and a separately formed rear interface portion, fixed to the body portion adjacent to a down-flow end of the top wall. The rear interface portion forms a lip projecting below the top wall.

Fiber-reinforced resin member and method for producing fiber-reinforced resin member

A fiber-reinforced resin member is provided in which a non-conductive sleeve and first and second non-conductive sheets are disposed between a metal fastening member and CFRP laminate, electrical continuity between the metal fastening member and the CFRP laminate is cut off, and corrosion of the metal fastening member due to galvanic corrosion is prevented. A first annular space is formed between a first flange portion of a first member and the first non-conductive sheet, a second annular space is formed between a second flange portion of a second member and the second non-conductive sheet. Therefore, even if frayed carbon fiber sticks out from a gap between the non-conductive sleeve and the first and second non-conductive sheets, due to the first and second annular spaces being formed therein, it is possible to prevent the sticking-out carbon fiber from contacting the first and second members and providing electrical continuity.

Techniques are disclosed for additive manufacturing systems and methods to form reinforced additive manufactured objects. A method for forming a reinforced additive manufactured object includes forming a first structural layer with a first void that extends partially through the first structural layer, forming a second structural layer with a second void that extends fully through the second structural layer to a border between the first structural layer and the second structural layer, where the first void and the second void align to form a cross-load void across the border between the first and second structural layers, and filling the cross-load void with a reinforcing material to form a cross-load member.

Method of assembly of composite core sandwich edge joint

A method for assembling a composite wall assembly edge joint including laying up a first composite face sheet, laying up a first composite buildup pad having a first tapered section onto the first composite face sheet and positioning a composite flute core member, including a tapered first portion with a first inclined surface and a second inclined surface. First inclined surface is positioned onto the first tapered section of the first composite buildup pad and a second portion of the composite flute core member extends from the tapered first portion along first composite face sheet. The method also includes laying up a second composite buildup pad having a second tapered section with the second composite buildup pad spaced apart from the first composite buildup pad and having at least a portion of the second tapered section overlying the second inclined surface of the tapered first portion.

Structures and methods for controlled thermal expansion

Products and methods are provided for controlling thermal expansion. In various exemplary embodiments, a structure includes a body constructed of a material exhibiting a first coefficient of linear thermal expansion. A component is disposed inside the body and exhibits a second coefficient of linear thermal expansion that is lower than the first coefficient of linear thermal expansion. A layer is wrapped around the body and constrains thermal expansion of the body. The layer includes a composite containing fibers that are aligned with one another to constrain expansion in a desired direction or in multiple directions. The layer is independently useful to provide a retention function for the body.
