A friction transmission belt has a rubber layer forming a pulley contacting portion. The rubber layer is made of a rubber composition containing a crosslinked rubber component and crosslinked polyolefin particles. Examples of the crosslinked polyolefin particles can contain ultrahigh molecular weight polyolefin particles having an average molecular weight of 500,000 or more.

A V-ribbed belt which comprises core wires and a stretch rubber layer constituted of a vulcanizate of a rubber composition comprising a rubber ingredient and short is provided. The content of the short fibers in the rubber composition is 15-50 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of the rubber ingredient and the rubber composition has a minimum Mooney scorch viscosity, as measured at 125 C., of 70-130.
