Mechanically attaching articles made from composites has problems due to the difference in properties of the composite in the x, y planar direction and the z perpendicular direction, this results in different properties between the composite and the attachment member such as differences in coefficients of thermal expansion which can weaken the joint further leading to differences in moisture uptake which can further reduce the strength and robustness of the joint. The invention relates to the selection of the position of a joint in order to reduce such problems and to operating the moulding process in a way that improves the provision of mechanical attachments such as bolt holes.

Thermoplastic Composite In-Situ Melt Processing Method for Composite Overwrapped Tools
20170232687 · 2017-08-17 ·

An in-situ melt processing method for forming a fiber thermoplastic resin composite overwrapped workpiece, such as a composite overwrapped pressure vessel. Carbon fiber, or other types of fiber, are combined with a thermoplastic resin system. The selected fiber tow and the resin are prepared for impregnation of the two by the resin. The resin is melted and the carbon fiber is impregnated with the melted resin under pressure at the filament winding machine delivery head, under pressure and the molten composite is maintained and is applied to the heated surface of a workpiece. The surface of the workpiece is heated to the melting point of the thermoplastic resin so that the molten composite more efficiently adheres to the heated surface of the workpiece and so that the layers of composite remain molten resulting in better adherence of the layers to one another.

Co-curing process for the joining of composite structures
09731453 · 2017-08-15 · ·

A method of fabricating a composite assembly may include providing a first laminate and a second laminate respectively formed of first and second composite plies, and having a respective first and second cured section and a respective first and second uncured section. The method may further include interleaving the first composite plies in the first uncured section with the second composite plies in the second uncured section to form an interfacial region. The method may additionally include curing the interfacial region to join the first laminate to the second laminate and form a unitized composite assembly.

A system is provided for producing components of composite material, and especially elongate or continuous components of fiber-reinforced polymer. The system comprises a winding mechanism for winding an elongate sheet of composite material about a winding axis that is at an angle to a perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the elongate sheet so as to form a helical coil of wound sheet a mechanism is provided for drawing or conveying the helical coil of wound sheet along a process path, wherein the process path is preferably substantially parallel to the winding axis. A shaping mechanism forms or shapes the coil of wound sheet as it is drawn or conveyed along the process path. A corresponding method of producing a composite component is provided.

Method for producing a fiber metal laminate component of an airplane

A method for producing a Fiber Metal Laminate component of an airplane, using a manipulator system with an end effector and a control, wherein at least one metal layer and at least one unhardened fiber layer are being stacked onto each other in a mould in a stacking sequence, wherein each stacking cycle comprises picking up a metal layer or a fiber layer from a supply stack according to the stacking sequence, transporting the layer to the mould, placement of the layer at a deposition surface in the mould and depositing the so placed layer onto the deposition surface. After being picked up from the supply stack and before being deposited onto the deposition surface the layer to be stacked can be deformed by the end effector as to adapt the form of the layer to the form of the deposition surface.

METHOD FOR WELDING PARTS MADE OF THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL

The invention first relates to a method for welding at least two parts comprising a thermoplastic material and having respective surfaces to be welded, comprising: inserting an insert between the surfaces to be welded of the two parts; generating heat via said insert; wherein the insert moves in relation to the parts to be welded in a welding direction. The invention also relates to an installation adapted for implementation of this method.
