Anchoring in a lightweight building element
A method of anchoring a connector in a heterogeneous first object that includes a first building layer and, distally of the first building layer, an interlining layer. The method includes providing the first object and the connector, which includes thermoplastic material in a solid state; contacting the connector with the first building layer; applying a first mechanical pressing force to the connector until the first building layer is pierced by the connector and a distal portion of the connector reaches into the interlining layer; applying a second mechanical pressing force and mechanical vibration to the connector until a flow portion of the thermoplastic material is flowable and penetrates structures of the first object, and a distally facing abutment face of the head portion abuts against the metal profile in a region next to the opening; and letting the thermoplastic material resolidify to yield a positive-fit connection.
Composite rail tie apparatus and method
A railroad crosstie (tie) may be fabricated from a composite material including a fiber reinforced polymer shell manufactured by pultrusion or other process, and filled by a suitable material, typically selected from expanded elastomeric polymer (such as polyurethane resin or other polymer), concrete, lightweight concrete formed by conventional aggregate, sand, cement, water, and an ultra light filler such as natural materials, sawdust, beads of expanded polymer such as expanded polystyrene, microspheres of glass or plastic, a recycled wooden tie in conjunction with any of the above, or the like. Fasteners may be driven such as spikes, threaded, such as screws, lag screws, spreading screws, rivets, or the like into apertures, pilot holes, or directly into fill absent apertures therein.
Flexible mat forming system and method
In an exemplary embodiment, a system for forming a flexible mat having an open mesh embedded in and interconnecting a plurality of blocks of a hardened paste includes a rotating drum having a plurality of mold cavities about an outer periphery thereof that receive a hardenable paste; a sheet of the open mesh that is fed over the mold cavities so that the mesh is embedded in the hardenable paste deposited in the mold cavities; and a flexible sheet that is placed against the outer periphery of the drum over the mold cavities containing the hardenable paste and the sheet of open mesh of the rotating drum to retain the hardenable paste within the mold cavities and retain the open mesh embedded in the hardenable paste as the hardenable paste solidifies to form the flexible mat.
PLASTIC PAVER BLOCKS
A plastic patio paver block comprises a top panel, a sidewall depending downwardly from a periphery of the top panel, a plurality of internal support members that depend downwardly from an inner face of the top panel and that are spaced inwardly from the sidewall, a plurality of drainage openings provided in the top panel, and a granular UV resistant material embedded into an upwardly facing plastic face of the top panel, wherein a portion of the granular UV resistant material is partially embedded in the upwardly facing plastic face.
Fluid dispensing device
The invention pertains generally to an improved fluid dispensing device, particularly a dispensing device which employs at least one hemispherical domed cannister source of reactants and which uses a color-changing dispensing plastic tip to inform the end-user if the reactants are at a proper use temperature.
Method of making a building panel and the panel
The invention relates, among other things, to a method of making a thin panel (10) for outdoor applications, comprising, among other things, the following steps: a) providing a deep-drawable film (10) of a transparent plastic, b) deep-drawing the film (11) in a mold (34), c) mounting a structure (19) having solar cells (32) on an inner face (16) of the deep-drawn film (12), d) placing the deep-drawn film (12) with mounted structure (19) in a cavity (33) of a mold (34) having in particular at least two mold halves (13, 14), e) introducing a liquid polyurethane casting compound (24) into the cavity (33) of the mold (34) and spreading the polyurethane casting compound (24) over an inner face (18) of the structure (19) and/or over the inner face (16) of the film (12), f) curing the polyurethane casting compound, in particular with the mold closed, to form a reinforcement layer (30), or comprising the following steps j) and k) instead of the steps e) and f): j) introducing a granular particle foam mass into the cavity (33) of the mold (34) and spreading over an inner face (18) of the structure (19) and/or over the inner face (16) of the film (12), k) baking and curing the particle foam mass, in particular with the mold closed, to form a reinforcement layer (30).
Method of Forming a Foldable or Collapsible Plastic and/or Composite Utility Enclosure
A method of forming and assembling a foldable plastic utility enclosure using molds to form sides of the enclosure, preferably using glass fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite. The molds are constructed to form a central hole in hinge members which are formed on ends of the sides. The central hole of the hinge member is molded with two molding parts, wherein one or both of the molding parts have a solid central portion that forms the central hole. The sides are removed from the molds after curing and the sides are assembled to form the utility enclosure while the sides are still hot from the molding process. Hinge pins are inserted into the central holes of the hinge members to form hinges and to prevent the sides from warping during cooling. Assembling the sides and inserting hinge pins to form the utility enclosure is completed within approximately 10 minutes after removing the sides from the molds.
Bending method for bending a composite bar
A bending method and a bending device, wherein a composite bar comprising a bundle of reinforcing fibres embedded in a polymer matrix is bent at a bending point. To make it bendable, the composite bar is heated locally at the bending point using an ultrasonic device with a sonotrode. After the bending point has been heated, an infeeding movement between the composite bar and the sonotrode is used to deform a region of the composite bar at the bending point to create a deformed portion of which the outer dimensions are different from the outer dimensions of the bar portions of the composite bar adjoining the bending point. The two bar portions are then moved or angled away in relation to one another, and so the composite bar is curved at the bending point. Once the desired bending has been achieved, the composite bar is cured at the bending point.
SANDWICH-STRUCTURED PANELS AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE
Sandwich-structured noise-attenuating and/or structural panels and methods of manufacturing such panels using ultrasonic welding are described. The method includes: receiving a backing member, a sheet and a cellular structure; assembling the cellular structure between the backing member and the sheet; and ultrasonically welding the backing member and the sheet together.
