A paper-based composite container for an off-gassing product includes a paperboard can body having a substantially gas-impervious liner attached to an inner surface thereof, and a pair of substantially paper-based end closures attached to the opposite ends of the can body, each end closure defining a generally cylindrical sealing panel in contact with an inner surface of the can body. Heat-sealable materials are disposed on opposing surfaces of the sealing panel and can body. The sealing panels of the end closures are attached to the can body by heat seals. The heat seal for at least one of the end closures is discontinuous such that at least one vent channel extends through the heat seal to establish fluid communication between an interior of the container and the environment outside the container. The at least one vent channel is operable to vent excess gas pressure from the interior of the container.

A system for automatically forming packaging boxes comprises a folding station comprising four folding units adapted to fold panels of cardboards blanks to form substantially cuboid boxes or lids or combinations of a box and a lid, some of said panels in the folded state forming pairs of two panels running substantially parallel to each other in a processing direction, in which the blanks are transported through the system, and orthogonal to a width direction of the blanks, which is the orthogonal direction to the processing direction in the plane of the blanks, one or more glue application units adapted to put glue on at least one panel of each of said pairs of two panels, a feeding conveyor to convey a cardboard blank into the folding station, a curing station adapted to take over the boxes or lids or combinations of a box and a lid folded in the forming station from the folding station, said curing station comprising holding structure to form-fittingly hold said pairs of panels and to guide the boxes or lids or combinations of a box and a lid through the curing station.

Apparatus and method for forming boxes with curved corners from a diecut sheet

An apparatus forms boxes with curved corners from a die-cut sheet. A forming matrix delimits a forming cavity by guides counterposed in pairs along two orthogonal axes. The guides define a die-cut sheet support plane. A forming head inserts inside the cavity to push the die-cut sheet to form a box. Vacuum gripping devices are arranged outside the cavity in opposite positions along the second axis and each grip from underneath the die-cut sheet to hold it on the support. Pusher devices are arranged outside and near one of the corners of the cavity. Each pusher device raises one side flap of the die-cut sheet from the support plane. An electronic control unit operates the main gripping devices, pusher devices and forming head according to the following sequence: actuating the gripping devices; actuating the pushers; deactivating the gripping devices; and inserting the forming head in the forming cavity.

A method and system are disclosed for forming a can from a re-configurable blank. A blank is also disclosed that may be a paper based blank and may be of multi-layer construction. The method may comprise: (a) supporting the blank in a first orientation; (b) positioning a first portion of an outward facing surface of a blank support device proximate a first portion of the blank while the blank is in the first orientation; (c) while the first portion of the blank is in the first orientation, rotating a second portion of the blank around a second portion of the outward facing surface of the blank support device; and (d) rotating a third portion of the blank from the first orientation, around a third portion of the outward facing surface of the blank support device. A generally tubular side wall may thus be formed for a can.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming containers. The containers may be cans, including composite cans. The apparatus may include a cylindrical mandrel and a blank may be formed into a cylindrical tube around the mandrel. Rotational apparatuses may engage portions of a blank that may be in a flat configuration and may rotate the portions around the outward cylindrical surface of the mandrel. Free edges of the tubular blank may be sealed by a sealing strip that may be T-shaped in cross section. A cup may be installed in an end opening, such as a bottom end, of the cylindrical tube. The cup may be sealed in the end opening by a seaming process using a seaming apparatus.

The invention relates to a polygonal container comprising a tubular polygonal body (10) with an even number of flat faces (11) numbering more than four, which is formed by a strip of corrugated cardboard (19) rolled up at least two full turns and adhered to itself by means of lines of glue (30) transverse to the channels of the corrugated cardboard, forming a multilayer wall (13); a base body (20) defined by a base panel of cut and folded stiff double-faced corrugated cardboard (24) attached around an end portion of the tubular polygonal body (10). The method comprises forming the tubular polygonal body by means of rolling the strip of corrugated cardboard around a polygonal rotary drum (51) and subsequently attaching to a base body (20).

Flexible packaging structure with a built-in opening and reclose feature

A flexible packaging laminate is formed to have a built-in opening and reclose feature by forming the laminate as a two-part structure having an outer structure joined in face-to-face relation with an inner structure. Score lines are formed in both structures to enable an opening to be formed through the laminate by lifting an opening portion (e.g., a flap or the like) of the two structures out of the plane of the laminate. The score line through the outer structure defines a larger opening than the score line through the inner structure, such that a marginal region of the outer structure extends beyond the edge of the opening portion of the inner structure. A pressure-sensitive adhesive is used to re-adhere the marginal region to an underlying surface of the inner structure adjacent the opening through the laminate.
