Fiber Polymer Composite Laminate
A useful composite layer can be a single layer composite of fiber lengths dispersed in a polymer. A useful laminate composite can have a minimum structure of three or more layers. The laminate can have a center layer combined with two outside single layers.
High performance light weight vehicle frame
This invention relates to polygonal frame structures made from anisotropic materials, and methods for their construction. The polygonal frame structures include at least one frame member that is constructed as a torsion box. The torsion box is constructed with layers of anisotropic materials, resulting in a lightweight, torsionally stiff polygonal frame. Natural and/or man-made anisotropic materials may be used. Wood may be used as a natural anisotropic material. The invention is applicable to bicycles and other vehicles, as well as other products, where frame structures having light weight and torsional stiffness are advantageous.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE POLYETHYLENE MULTIFILAMENT YARN
Processes for making high-performance polyethylene multi-filament yarn are disclosed which include the steps of a) making a solution of ultra-high molar mass polyethylene in a solvent; b) spinning of the solution through a spinplate containing at least 5 spinholes into an air-gap to form fluid filaments, while applying a draw ratio DR.sub.fluid; c) cooling the fluid filaments to form solvent-containing gel filaments; d) removing at least partly the solvent from the filaments; and e) drawing the filaments in at least one step before, during and/or after said solvent removing, while applying a draw ratio DR.sub.solid of at least 4, wherein in step b) each spinhole comprises a contraction zone of specific dimension and a downstream zone of diameter Dn and length Dn with Ln/Dn of from 0 to at most 25, to result in a draw ratio DR.sub.fluid=DR.sub.sp*DR.sub.ag of at least 150, wherein DR.sub.sp is the draw ratio in the spinholes and DR.sub.ag is the draw ratio in the air-gap, with DR.sub.sp being greater than 1 and DR.sub.ag at least 1. High-performance polyethylene multifilament yarn, and semi-finished or end-use products containing said yarn, especially to ropes and ballistic-resistant composites, are also disclosed.
FIRE-RESISTANT BAMBOO STRUCTURAL BUILDING MATERIAL
Bamboo lumber products and fabrication techniques thereof are provided. Thick-wall bamboo culm is cut into multiple slats, each made up of a solid portion of culm. The slats are laminated, joined, or otherwise combined to form solid panels, boards, or other lumber products. The use of thick-walled bamboo and associated processes as disclosed allows for lumber products that have a lower glue-to-bamboo ratio and therefore provide superior characteristics compared to conventional techniques and products.
Surface engineering of thermoplastic materials and tooling
A prepared mold tool having a thermoplastic surface layer polymer coating on the mold surface of the mold tool or prepared prepreg having a thermoplastic surface layer polymer coating on the surface of the thermoplastic fiber reinforced prepreg are described that enhance first ply laydown of thermoplastic fiber reinforced composite prepregs onto mold tools for prepreg forming or in situ tape placement. Resulting thermoplastic fiber reinforced composite parts from a thermoplastic fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite material having structural reinforcement fibers with one or more high performance polymers, and a thermoplastic surface layer polymer coating which forms a polymer blend with the high performance polymers of the thermoplastic fiber reinforced composite material thereby imparting improved properties, and methods for making and using same, are provided herein.

The present invention relates to fibre composite materials composed of a fibre material and an aromatic polycarbonate-based matrix material and to multilayer composite materials comprising one or more such layers of fibre composite material. The fibre composite material has a pleasing look with stripes that seem naturally formed on a white or coloured background. The fibre layer(s) is/are embedded in the matrix material. The present invention further relates to a process for producing the fibre composite materials and multilayer composite materials and to components, housing components or housings, especially for laptop, notebook or ultrabook covers, comprising such composite materials themselves.
MULTILAYER COMPOSITE DESIGN MATERIAL HAVING SPECIAL POLYCARBONATE COMPOSITIONS AS MATRIX MATERIAL
The present invention relates to fibre composite materials composed of a fibre material and an aromatic polycarbonate-based matrix material and to multilayer composite materials comprising one or more such layers of fibre composite material. Reinforced composite assemblies and methods of manufacturing the same
A reinforced composite assembly includes a first sheet made of carbon fiber and having a first perimeter, a second sheet made of a non-carbon fiber material and having a second perimeter, wherein the second sheet is disposed atop the first sheet within the first perimeter, and a metallic plate having a third perimeter, wherein the metallic plate is disposed atop the second sheet within the second perimeter. The metallic plate has a plurality of holes formed therein about a perimeter of the metallic plate and defining a plurality of respective bridge portions between each of the holes and an adjacent outer edge of the metallic plate, and/or a plurality of extensions extending outward from a main portion of the metallic plate. A first arrangement of thread stitching secures each of the bridge portions and extensions to the second sheet or to the first and second sheets.
Reinforced composite assemblies and methods of manufacturing the same
A reinforced composite assembly includes a first sheet made of carbon fiber and having a first perimeter, a second sheet made of a non-carbon fiber material and having a second perimeter, wherein the second sheet is disposed atop the first sheet within the first perimeter, and a metallic plate having a third perimeter, wherein the metallic plate is disposed atop the second sheet within the second perimeter. The metallic plate has a plurality of holes formed therein about a perimeter of the metallic plate and defining a plurality of respective bridge portions between each of the holes and an adjacent outer edge of the metallic plate, and/or a plurality of extensions extending outward from a main portion of the metallic plate. A first arrangement of thread stitching secures each of the bridge portions and extensions to the second sheet or to the first and second sheets.
