FLAME RETARDANT BUILDING CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND PROCESS

Disclosed is a building and construction material and process including multiple layers and vermiculite ore in at least one layer. A substrate layer may have one or more layers on top or on the bottom of it. Numerous compounds may be used in one or more of the layers including asphaltic compound, polymer modified asphalt compound, thermoplastic polymer compound and others. The layers may also include synergistic flame retardant and fillers. And disclosed is a process to manufacture the building and construction material.

The shingle coating asphalt coating composition is used to make a shingle. The shingle includes a substrate, the asphalt, and roofing granules.

The height increasing material includes a first adhesive adhered to the overlay, height increasing granules adhered to the first adhesive, and a second adhesive adhered to the height increasing granules and the underlay. The height increasing material can extend along front ends of tab portions of the overlay, along front cutout edges that extend between tab portions of the overlay, or both.

A method of making a laminated shingle is provided. The method includes coating a shingle mat with roofing asphalt to make an asphalt-coated sheet, adhering a reinforcement member to a portion of the asphalt-coated sheet, covering the asphalt-coated sheet, and optionally covering the reinforcement member, with granules to make a granule-covered sheet, dividing the granule-covered sheet into an overlay sheet and an underlay sheet, wherein the overlay sheet has a tab portion normally exposed on a roof and a headlap portion normally covered-up on a roof, the headlap portion having a lower zone adjacent the tab portion and an upper zone adjacent the lower zone, and wherein the reinforcement member is adhered to the lower zone of the headlap portion and laminating the overlay sheet and the underlay sheet to make the laminated shingle.
