A method of making a light weight housing for an internal component is provided. The method including the steps of: forming a first metallic foam core into a desired configuration; forming a second metallic foam core into a desired configuration; inserting an internal component into the first metallic foam core; placing the second metallic foam core adjacent to the first metallic core in order to secure the internal component between the first metallic foam core and the second metallic foam core; applying an external metallic shell to an exterior surface of the first metallic foam core and the second metallic foam core; and securing an inlet fitting and an outlet fitting to the housing, wherein a thermal management fluid path for the internal component into and out of the housing is provided by the inlet fitting and the outlet fitting.

Structural panels for exposed surfaces

An apparatus includes a foam layer, a coating layer and an elastomer. The foam layer includes a first surface for coupling the apparatus to a surface exposed to weather, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a plurality of pores within the foam layer. The coating layer is deposited on the second surface of the foam layer. The elastomer is deposited within the plurality of pores within the foam layer.

Siding panel assembly

A thermoplastic composite sheet for exterior cladding applications includes an outer layer with a thermoplastic resin composition reinforced with a high aspect ratio filler such that the outer layer has a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of no more than approximately 2.3310.sup.5 in/in/deg F., and a backing layer bonded to the outer layer, the backing layer defined by a foam material. The outer layer and the backing later define a body having a substantially planar outer surface.

High temperature, flexible aerogel composite and method of making same

Aerogels, aerogel composites and methods of making the same are discussed. One example method can include the act of creating a boehmite colloid and adding a hydrolyzed silicon precursor to form a sol. A reinforcement can be infused with the sol and dried to form an aerogel composite. Such a method can also include the acts of performing one or more solvent exchanges and subjecting the gel composite to supercritical drying. Additionally, such a method can include the act of heat treating the aerogel composite. The aerogel composite can be used in high temperature, flexible seals capable of withstanding temperatures, pressures, and compression levels associated with aerodynamic heating generated during flight and in aerospace applications.
