Slip-resistant floor coverings

The invention provides a synthetic slip-resistant floor-covering material comprising a layer of synthetic material which contains one or more degradable polymeric particles wherein the one or more degradable polymeric particles comprise: (a) one or more hard degradable polymeric particles which have a hardness which is greater than the hardness of the layer of synthetic material; and optionally (b) one or more soft degradable polymeric particles which have a hardness which is the same as or less than the hardness of the layer of synthetic material; and wherein the one or more hard degradable polymeric particles comprise one or more exposed hard degradable polymeric particles which are exposed at an upper surface of the synthetic floor-covering material to provide slip-resistance; and a method of preparing a synthetic floor-covering which method comprises the steps of: Providing a layer of synthetic material; Applying the one or more degradable polymeric particles to the layer of synthetic material; and Applying pressure to the layer of synthetic material to ensure that the one or more degradable polymeric particles are incorporated into the layer of synthetic material.

Needle-punched structures containing recycled fibers

Textiles are re-cycled by grinding and scatter-laying onto a needle-punched web optionally containing low-melting material, followed by laying a second needle-punched web over the scattered layer and re-needling the three layers before applying heat or heat and pressure to activate the low-melting ground material present within the layers. Additional low-melt ground material is optionally blended into the ground textile if low melt components are absent or insufficient to bond the composite. The ground material is driven and dispersed into the surrounding web layers with at least part of the material being adjacent the two outer surfaces. The physical properties of the composite can be adjusted by selecting suitable combinations including but not limited to needling stroke depth, needling density, needle gage, low-melt content, heat finishing conditions, and relative layer weights. The final composites can optionally be reintroduced into the original end use and include significant percentages of recycled material.

The disclosed composite structure provides a reinforced thermoplastic polymer composite part with a high-quality surface finish. This may be used as a vehicle part or body panel, such as an interior vehicle part or exterior body panel. Additionally, the surface finish may be coloured, such that the surface does not need to be painted or wrapped to achieve a desired surface colour, and the surface may protect inner layers from UV radiation, either by virtue of the material of the surface itself, or the incorporation of a UV-absorbing additive. Specifically, the disclosed composite structure comprises a structural layer comprising reinforcing fibres, such as glass or carbon fibres, and a thermoplastic body polymer. The structure further comprises a surface layer providing a surface finish to the composite structure, the surface layer comprising a thermoplastic surface polymer substantially free from reinforcing fibres.
