Apparatus, system and method for facilitating tracking of consumable pharmaceutical articles
Embodiments of an apparatus, system and method for facilitating the tracking of consumable pharmaceutical articles are disclosed. A marking apparatus is configured to apply unique indelible identifiers to pharmaceutical articles at the point-of-sale. The indelible identifiers on the articles are visually or electronically readable to allow each respective article to be traced with respect to its manufacturer, prescribing physician, patient to whom it was prescribed, dispensing location, expiration date, dosage, or some combination thereof. An associated system and method may involve the provision of a remote database element configured to be in network communication between the marking apparatus, manufacturer, distributor, prescriber, dispensing location, scanning tool, or some combination thereof. The indelible identifier may initially be generated by the apparatus and then obtained and recorded by the remote database element. Alternative, the indelible identifier may initially be generated and recorded by the remote database element, then provided to the marking apparatus.

A tablet printing apparatus 1 according to embodiments includes an imaging device 23 that images a side surface of a tablet T on which a split line is formed on one surface, a carrying device 21 that carries the tablet T, a printing head device 24 that prints information on the tablet T carried by the carrying device 21, and a controlling device 50 that specifies an angle of the split line based on an image obtained by the imaging device 23, creates a printing data for printing the information in accordance with the split line using the specified angle, and controls the printing head device 24 using the created printing data.

The conveyor has opposing first and second side portions, and at least one pocket is defined in the conveyor between the opposing first and second side portions. The conveyor is configured to receive from the hopper a tablet-shaped article in the at least one pocket. A first window is defined in the first side portion of the conveyor. The first window defining an opening between the pocket and an external environment. The system further includes a first printing head adjacent the first side portion of the conveyor. The first printing head is configured to mark the tablet-shaped article through the first window.
