A system and method for generating a normalized page count for a printer includes an encoder that is coupled to the registration motor of the registration rollers. A memory stores an encoder count that is updated as encoder data is received from the encoder. A processor determines the normalized page count from the encoder count stored in memory. The normalized page count substantially reflects the equivalent number of standard pages printed by the printer. The normalized page count is stored as the page count for the printer.

In an image forming apparatus, a storage unit contains, by each of a plurality of languages that are respectively associated with each direction of slide operations, a character string. A display controller causes a display unit to display, on a screen, an instruction-receiving image to be touched through a touch panel. When a slide operation is performed on a non-operational region where the instruction-receiving image is not located, the character string of the language associated with the direction of the slide operation is retrieved from the storage unit, and a selected-language window is generated by substituting the character string displayed on the screen of the display unit with the character string that has been retrieved, and displayed only for a predetermined period of time.

A multi-function peripheral (100) includes a main controller (400) which executes a function in a normal mode and stops in a power-saving mode, a sub-controller (401) which executes a function in the power-saving mode, an accumulation unit (402) which is operable, in the case where setting information for a prescribed setting item is changed in the function executed in the power-saving mode, to accumulate the setting information before and after the change in a prescribed memory (403), and a notification unit (404) which is operable, in response to switching from the power-saving mode to the normal mode, to make notification to a user by displaying the accumulated setting information before and after the change.

An image forming apparatus 102 that can flexibly cope with control command incompatibility caused by peripheral parts of the microcomputer device 103 to expand the function of the image forming apparatus 102. A status management unit 162 manages the state of the image forming apparatus 102, and a microcomputer command processing unit 181 communicates with the microcomputer device 103 attached to the image forming apparatus 102. An authentication operation of a communication device is facilitated without making an outer appearance of an image forming apparatus complicated. An image forming apparatus 1 includes an image reading portion 41 for reading an original image, an image forming portion 44 for forming the image on a recording material, communication devices 32 and 33 capable of communication with a storing device 52 for storing information through rear-range wireless communication, and a mounting portion 23 to which the communication devices are mounted, and the mounting portion is provided between the image reading portion and the image forming portion.

An image forming apparatus 10 includes a control unit 20 that, when images are successively formed on a plurality of recording media by an image forming unit 22, obtains waste-sheet information indicating whether each of the plurality of recording media is a waste sheet and, for a waste sheet, indicating a cause of the waste sheet; identifies whether each of the recording media is a waste sheet in accordance with the obtained waste-sheet information; and, in a case of a waste sheet, performs control to arrange and display, on a touch panel display 35, a waste-sheet state display image 54 that makes a cause of the waste sheet distinguishable in chronological order of formation of the images.
